Andrea Chiesa (born May 6, 1964 in Milan ) is a Swiss automobile racing driver . He took among others in 1992 in races for 1 Formula World Championship and 2007 and 2008 at the 24-hour race at Le Mans in part.
Career
Born in Milan, Chiesa drove his first good season in 1986 in the Italian Formula 3 championship , which he surpassed in 1987 with three wins in the first four races. In the championship he had to admit defeat to Enrico Bertaggia at the end of the year .
In 1988 Chiesa entered the Formula 3000 . The first year was difficult and marked by many failures. The Swiss could only score one point for the championship. In 1989 he improved, won the race in Enna and finished second in Vallelunga . He finished the championship in sixth.
In 1990 , as a driver in the team of Paul Stewart, the son of Jackie Stewart , he reached seventh place overall. However, his fourth season in a row in Formula 3000 turned into a disaster. Although Chiesa could fall back on the best material, the season ended without a single point in the championship.
Nevertheless, Chiesa got a works contract in Formula 1 in 1992 . He signed with Fondmetal , the successor to Osella, and made his debut at the Mexican Grand Prix . However, the time in Formula 1 was a failure. Chiesa was only able to qualify for a Grand Prix three times and the failure rate was 100%. Twice he retired prematurely after a spin, in France he collided with Maurício Gugelmin .
The Formula 1 dream ended after just one year and Chiesa went to the USA . He drove the inaugural Champ Car race in 1993 at Surfers Paradise and competed in sports car races for Riley & Scott .
After years of absence, the Swiss made a comeback with the Spyker team at Le Mans in 2007 . Also in 2008 he competed for the Dutch team and their Spyker C8 in the Le Mans Series and at the Sarthe. Both races ended in retirement; In 2007 there was an engine failure and the following year it was again a technical defect that ended the trip prematurely.
