Reports
background
Although the new Andrea Moda team had meanwhile paid the required entry fee, they decided not to take part in the second round of the season because the two S921 racing cars could not be prepared for a race in time. The rest of the entry list corresponded to that of the season opener in South Africa three weeks earlier.
training
Since Andrea Moda did not start, a pre-qualification could again be dispensed with.
The two Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese dominated qualifying, with Mansell winning over his team-mate. The Benetton drivers Michael Schumacher and Martin Brundle formed the second row in front of the two McLaren MP4 / 6B of Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna .
run
Mansell took the lead ahead of Patrese, Senna, Brundle, Schumacher and Berger. Karl Wendlinger collided with Ivan Capelli in midfield . During the second lap, Schumacher overtook his team-mate Brundle. Senna initially fell behind due to transmission problems and was finally eliminated after twelve laps.
The two Williams drivers achieved the second one-two in a row, with both holding their positions throughout the race. With Michael Schumacher, for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix in 1977, a German driver took a place on the podium at a Grand Prix. Gerhard Berger was fourth ahead of Andrea de Cesaris and Mika Häkkinen .
