report

backgrounds

After the US Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' championship unassailable with 76 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 80 points ahead of Nico Rosberg . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was unmatchable with 200 points ahead of Ferrari and 354 points ahead of Williams .

At the Mexican Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Comparison of the routes 1992 and 2015

Since the last Formula 1 world championship run in 1992 , the route has been heavily rebuilt, the routing was only identical to the old version in a few places. This reduced the length of the course from 4,421 to 4,304 meters.

There were two DRS zones, the first zone was on the start and finish straight and began exactly 425 meters behind the last corner. The second DRS zone began 120 meters after turn three . There was only one measuring point for both DRS zones, where the distance to the vehicle in front was determined; it was at the exit of turn 15 . In the event of a successful overtaking maneuver on the start and finish straight, the driver in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.

Pastor Maldonado (six), Max Verstappen (five), Marcus Ericsson , Nico Hülkenberg , Sergio Pérez (four each), Kimi Räikkönen , Vettel (three), Jenson Button , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton and Daniil Kwjat (two each) went with penalty points into the race weekend.

The Mexican Grand Prix was held for the first time since 1992, so no previous winner entered this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Mark Blundell (GBR), Gerd Ennser (DEU) and Jorge Rodriguez (MEX).

training

In the first free practice, Verstappen set the fastest time in 1: 25.990 minutes, ahead of Kwjat and Raikkonen. Verstappen cut short on his fastest lap, but the stewards refrained from cutting the lap time. The training started in wet conditions, the track dried out during the training.

In the second free practice, Rosberg was fastest with a lap time of 1: 21.536 minutes ahead of Kwjat and Daniel Ricciardo . The training had to be interrupted five minutes after an accident by Verstappen.

In the third free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 21.083 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo. Button and Will Stevens could only drive a few laps due to technical problems and lagged behind the 107 percent time. After driving three laps, Raikkonen parked his vehicle after a fire in the drive area at the edge of the track.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. After the technical problems in free practice, Button was unable to participate in qualifying and did not qualify for the race. He was allowed to take part in the race because he was fast enough in free practice. The Manor pilots, Felipe Nasr and Fernando Alonso were eliminated.

The second qualifying segment (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. Hamilton was fastest. Raikkonen, Ericsson, Maldonado, Grosjean and Carlos Sainz jr. dropped out.

The last section lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Rosberg set the fastest time and thus achieved pole position in front of Hamilton and Vettel. It was his 20th pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship and the 16th pole position of the season for a Mercedes driver.

Button was moved a total of 50 positions backwards for the use of the tenth and eleventh internal combustion engines, as well as the tenth and eleventh copies of the turbocharger and MGU-H and the ninth and tenth copies of the MGU-K. Fernando Alonso was relocated by fifteen starting positions for using the eleventh internal combustion engine and due to an early change of gearbox. Since Button also used a sixth copy of the control electronics after the third free practice session, the relocation increased to 55 starting positions. In addition, the twelfth turbocharger and the twelfth MGU-H were installed on race day, which increased the penalty again to 70 starting places. After the third free practice session, Raikkonen was moved five starting positions back due to a premature gear change. Shortly before the start of the race, the entire drive unit of his Ferrari was changed, Räikkönen was moved back a total of 35 positions due to the use of the sixth combustion engine and the fifth turbocharger, MGU-H, energy storage and control electronics.

run

Rosberg stayed ahead of Hamilton at the start, behind which Kwjat passed Vettel. Ricciardo also attacked Vettel, there was a contact in which Vettel suffered a tire damage. So at the end of the first lap he drove into the pit lane to change tires. Alonso complained of a loss of performance on the first lap and gave up the race in the pits at the end of the lap.

Bottas was the first driver to pit at the end of the eighth lap for a scheduled tire change, shortly afterwards Massa and Hülkenberg too. All three switched to the harder tire compound. Vettel spun in the 17th lap after a driving error, but was able to continue. As a result, he fell back from eleventh to 15th place. Pérez pitted to change tires and fell back to eleventh place. At this point Rosberg was leading ahead of Hamilton, Kwjat, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Bottas, Massa, Hülkenberg and Sainz.

Kwjat pitted at the end of lap 21 to change tires and fell back to fifth. He came back on the track just before Raikkonen and Bottas. Bottas attacked Raikkonen on the outside in turn four and sat next to him. He was on the inside before turn five , but Raikkonen pulled in anyway and a collision occurred. The right rear suspension broke at Raikkonen, he was eliminated. Bottas drove on with his vehicle, which was not damaged in the accident. The stewards investigated the incident but did not issue a penalty. On lap 25 Ricciardo came to change tires, one lap later also Verstappen. Ricciardo fell behind Kwjat, Bottas and Massa, then Verstappen was behind Hülkenberg. Rosberg changed his tires on lap 27 and initially fell behind Hamilton. Vettel ran into Maldonado and overtook him, but braked himself so that Maldonado could counter.

Hamilton pitted on lap 29 to change tires and fell behind Rosberg again. In the following two laps, the remaining three pilots, the Manor pilots and Button, also changed tires. Sainz shortened the route when he defended himself against an attack by Pérez, he let Pérez pass a few corners later without a fight so as not to receive a penalty. After the first pit stops, Rosberg was in front of Hamilton, Kwjat, Bottas, Massa, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Verstappen, Pérez and Sainz.

Vettel, who was still stuck behind Maldonado, was the first driver to come into the pits for the second tire change at the end of lap 35, dropping from eleventh to 14th. He came back on track immediately between Rosberg and Hamilton, one lap behind. After he was able to keep up with the pace of the two Mercedes drivers, he was shown blue flags and had to pass Hamilton a few laps later, but complained on the pit radio that he was faster than the two Mercedes. Pérez reduced the gap to Verstappen. Sainz changed tires for the second time, Grosjean passed and took tenth place.

Rosberg came into the pit lane for the second tire change on lap 46 and fell again behind Hamilton. Two laps later, Hamilton also changed tires, so the original order was restored. Ricciardo ran into Massa, but Williams was so fast on the straights that Ricciardo was initially unable to attack. Shortly afterwards, however, he overtook Massa when braking into turn one . Verstappen briefly went off the track due to a driving mistake, Pérez managed to get past him. Vettel turned again on lap 51 and hit the track barrier, the race management sent the safety car out onto the track to recover the vehicle . This was the first time since the 2006 Australian Grand Prix that both Ferrari drivers were eliminated. Kwjat, Ricciardo, Massa, Hülkenberg and Sainz took the opportunity to change tires. Bottas only pitted one lap later to change tires, but remained behind Kwjat and in front of Ricciardo. Pérez was the only driver who had only changed tires once. Button reported a fire on Nasr's brakes over the radio, but Nasr initially drove on. The race was reopened at the end of lap 57.

Bottas passed Kwjat at the restart and took third place. Nasr had to give up the race with a brake failure. Hamilton shortened the gap to Rosberg, at this point both were driving the fastest laps of the race to date. But there was no attack.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. It was the fourth win of the season for Rosberg and the 14th for Mercedes, the tenth as a double victory. Since he also drove the fastest race lap and achieved pole position, he achieved a hat trick . Bottas achieved his second podium finish of the season. The top 10 were completed by Kwjat, Ricciardo, Massa, Hülkenberg, Pérez, Verstappen and Grosjean.

With the victory, Rosberg took second place in the drivers' standings from Vettel. The first three places in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
