The McLaren MP4-30 was the Formula 1 - racing cars from McLaren-Honda for the Formula 1 World Championship 2015 . It was the 43rd McLaren Formula 1 car. The vehicle was presented in Woking on January 29, 2015 , and the presentation was broadcast live on the Internet.

Technology and development

The MP4-30 was the successor to the MP4-29 . The MP4-30 was powered by the Honda RA615H , a newly developed 1.6-liter V6 engine from Honda with a turbocharger . It was the first McLaren Formula 1 racing car after the end of the partnership with Mercedes , which existed from 1995 to 2014 , and the eighth McLaren Formula 1 racing car with a Honda engine.

Although the vehicle was a further development of the previous year's car, due to the changed rules for the 2015 Formula 1 season, it was outwardly different from the predecessor model, as the provisions on the vehicle nose were changed. The nose protruded very far over the front wing, the mount for the onboard camera was modeled on that of the Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid . There were also changes in the rear, as the Honda engine was more compact than the Mercedes-Benz PU106A Hybrid used in the previous year . The vehicle was kept very narrow, especially in the area of the transmission, which McLaren had developed and built itself.

The air inlet above the cockpit was divided into two by a horizontal strut, two more air inlets were located directly below. All the coolers were placed very close to the front in the side pods, so they were very short.

Development of the MP4-30 began in 2014 with the McLaren MP4-29H / 1X1 , a modified version of the MP4-29. McLaren used the opportunity of promotional events , heavily regulated film days with a maximum of 100 kilometers to drive, to test the new drive train for the first time. McLaren also contested the official test drives with the MP4-29H / 1X1 after the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit , but due to various technical problems, the vehicle was only able to drive around 27 kilometers on both test days.

As the first vehicle for the 2015 season, the McLaren MP4-30 passed all of the required crash tests in mid-December 2014.

At the Austrian Grand Prix , McLaren launched a vehicle with completely revised aerodynamics. The nose of this version was shorter, the front wing was new and the vehicle floor and diffuser were modified.

Painting and sponsorship

The MP4-30 was painted black and chrome at the beginning of the season. The front of the vehicle was enclosed by a red stripe that extended backwards over the side mirrors, also painted in red, to the engine cover.

From the Spanish Grand Prix onwards , the chrome-colored paintwork was omitted, the MP4-30 was now only painted in black and red.

Large parts of the car, including the side pods, were without sponsor stickers. On the engine cover, the team's lubricant supplier, ExxonMobil , advertised its Mobil 1 brand . Diageo advertised its Johnnie Walker brand on the vehicle, and stickers from CNN , engine supplier Honda, Pirelli , SAP and Segafredo Zanetti could also be found on the vehicle.

driver

Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso were confirmed as drivers . Button played his sixth season in a row with McLaren, Alonso returned to the team after five years with Ferrari . Kevin Magnussen , who made his Formula 1 debut as a regular driver of the team in the preseason, was a substitute and test driver, the latter together with Stoffel Vandoorne . Magnussen was used in the Australian Grand Prix because Alonso had to pause during test drives due to an accident.
