The McLaren MP4-19 was the Formula 1 racing cars from McLaren for the Formula 1 2004 season . It followed the McLaren MP4-17D used in the previous season .

background

McLaren contested the 2003 Formula 1 season in the heavily revised previous year's McLaren MP4-17 car from the 2002 season , called the McLaren MP4-17D . A car for the 2003 season was developed under the name McLaren MP4-18 , but never used because of cooling problems that could not be resolved because the car designed by Adrian Newey was designed too radically. The McLaren MP4-19 was developed from this never used car.

The MP4-19 proved to be very unreliable at the beginning of the season and too slow compared to the competition, so that a revised model, the MP4-19B , was used from the 11th race of the season in Great Britain . With this car, Kimi Räikkönen achieved a podium finish straight away.

driver

McLaren stuck to the successful pairing of drivers from the two previous years: with the number 5 the Scot David Coulthard and the vice world champion of the previous year, the Finn Kimi Räikkönen , with the number 6. The Austrian Alexander Wurz and the Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa acted as test drivers .

2004 season

The 2004 season was more than disappointing for McLaren. McLaren was unable to intervene in the fight for the title throughout the season. The MP4-19 proved to be extremely unreliable, especially at the beginning of the season, and the car often suffered engine damage. A podium position could not be achieved until the 11th race of the season in Great Britain, a second place was achieved by Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi Räikkönen managed to win only once during the season, in the 14th race of the season in Belgium .
