The Sauber C23 was that of Sauber for the 2004 season used Formula 1 - racing cars . The car is a further development of the Sauber C22 used in the previous season .

driver

After Sauber relied on the two Germans Nick Heidfeld and Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the 2003 season , the driver pairing was exchanged for the 2004 season. The Italian Giancarlo Fisichella left his previous team Jordan to join Sauber. The Brazilian Felipe Massa , who had already driven for Sauber as a regular driver in 2002 , returned to the Sauber cockpit after a year as a test driver at Scuderia Ferrari .

technology

For the first time, the Sauber C23 was equipped with the same type of Ferrari engine as Ferrari itself and not with the previous year's engine as before. The engine was named Petronas 04A . The car was a direct further development of the Sauber C22 . For this they took the Ferrari F2003-GA from last year as a model. In terms of design, care was taken to make the car lighter and more compact than the previous year's car.

2004 season

In contrast to the previous season, Sauber could not achieve any podium positions in 2004. The highlights were a 4th place each for Giancarlo Fisichella at the Canadian Grand Prix and Felipe Massa at the Belgian Grand Prix . As in the previous year, Sauber achieved 6th place in the constructors' championship with 34 points. 22 of these were obtained from Fisichella, 12 from Massa.

At the end of the 2004 season , the partnership with the main sponsor, Red Bull , ended, which took over the previously less successful racing team Jaguar and renamed it Red Bull Racing .
