The Sauber C17 was the Formula 1 racing car from Sauber Motorsport for the 1998 Formula 1 season and took part in all 16 races of that season. The car was powered by a Petronas SPE-01D-V-10 engine with 3 liter displacement, which developed 790 hp.

Technology and development

The technical director for the development of the car was Leo Ress , and Rene Hilhorst was responsible for the aerodynamics .

The 10-cylinder V- engine with a cylinder bank angle of 75 degrees and aluminum housing had a displacement of 2998.1 cm³. With an output of 537 kW (730 PS) and a maximum speed of 16,200 rpm, the Petronas engine (previously Ferrari 046) was not one of the most powerful of its year. The electronics and the injection were supplied by Magneti Marelli . The engine was 590 mm long, 580 mm wide, 400 mm high and weighed 118 kg. The sequential six-speed gearbox manufactured by Sauber / Xtrac was installed lengthways and was electrohydraulically shifted semi-automatically.

The chassis was a monocoque in sandwich construction with a honeycomb core and top layers made of composite material reinforced with carbon and aramid fibers . The wheelbase was 3020 mm, the track width 1470 mm and the tank volume 138 liters. The car weighed a total of 512 kg. The suspension on double wishbones had two dampers at the front and rear, which were operated via push rods and rocker arms. A total of seven chassis were built.

Racing history

Sauber C17 in Hangar-7

The season was prepared with the help of the long-standing Sauber employee and since 1995 the team manager of Sauber Max Welti . Surprisingly, Welti was no longer wanted in Hinwil at the end of 1997, and Peter Sauber took over his position. The reason for this step was that Peter Sauber wanted more direct responsibility for the team, and this would take Welti's place.

In the spring, Peter Sauber was the only Formula 1 team boss not to sign the Concorde Agreement . Isolation threatened cleanly in Formula 1. It was not until the summer that the agreement was signed after tough negotiations with Bernie Ecclestone and FIA President Max Mosley .

The Sauber C17 was not one of the successful designs of 1998 . This was not because the racing car was too slow, but rather the overall package lacked reliability. So you often dropped out towards the end of the race and lost valuable world championship points. Alesi retired from the Monaco race in fifth place with a gearbox failure and in Silverstone he was fourth when he suffered an electrical fault. In addition, Herbert and Alesi fell out several times due to collisions, for example Herbert in Buenos Aires and Alesi in Montreal and Spielberg . In the latter race he sensationally qualified for second place on the grid and was still in 5th place at the time of the retirement. Johnny Herbert also retired a few times due to driving errors. At the race in São Paulo he gave up prematurely due to physical complaints.

The goal of at least fifth place in the Constructors' World Championship was missed with sixth place and 10 points. Jean Alesi was ranked 11th with nine points and Johnny Herbert with one point in 15th place. Jean Alesi achieved the best result with third place at the Belgian Grand Prix .

Painting and sponsorship

The color of the racing car was dark blue due to the main sponsor Red Bull . Stickers from the beverage manufacturer were visible on the engine cover and the nose of the racer. The side pods and the rear wing were painted in the turquoise of the sponsor Petronas , where its lettering was also attached. Smaller sponsors were Silicon Graphics , Fritz Kaiser Group , Catia Solutions and the clothing company Bäumler.

driver

The drivers of the C17 were Frenchman Jean Alesi and Englishman Johnny Herbert . Back in September, Johnny Herbert announced that he had signed the Stewart Grand Prix for the 1999 season . Test driver was the German Jörg Müller .
