The 1998 Brazilian Grand Prix (officially XXVII Grande Prêmio Marlboro do Brasil ) took place on March 29 at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo and was the second race of the 1998 Formula 1 World Championship . Mika Häkkinen took first place ahead of David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher .
report
background
Several teams, especially Ferrari , officially protested at the FIA. The reason is the complex braking system at McLaren , which allows the driver to adjust the brakes on the rear wheels differently and independently, which provides additional traction when cornering. After Sauber, Jordan and Williams also experimented with it, the system was declared illegal by the FIA, although it was officially allowed before the season. McLaren did not appeal and said they would not use the system for the entire race weekend.
After the race in Australia , nine containers full of Minardi material could not be flown back to Europe as planned because the transport aircraft responsible was overloaded. After getting the equipment back, test days were held in Mugello. The tests were completed by Shinji Nakano and test driver Laurent Redon , Esteban Tuero was given a vacation due to the intensive tests before the first race of the season to prepare for the upcoming races.
training
Friday training
Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time in front of his team mate David Coulthard with 1: 18.573. Only after more than a second comes Ralf Schumacher in third place . Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher took tenth and eleventh place.
Olivier Panis caused a serious accident during training, in which Johnny Herbert , Ralf Schumacher , Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve , among others , were involved. Damon Hill hit the perimeter wall at the pit entrance on his own. Everyone involved got away with no injuries.
With the exception of Herbert, who only achieved a lap time of 2: 06.081 due to the accident, all drivers were placed within four and a half seconds.
Saturday training
Again, the McLarens around Häkkinen and Coulthard took first and second place, and again the third-placed driver was more than a second behind, this time Heinz-Harald Frentzen . Michael Schumacher took seventh place, Villeneuve was eleventh.
All drivers were placed within about four seconds.
Qualifying
For the third time, Häkkinen and Coulthard took first and second places, followed by Frentzen, again one second behind, Michael Schumacher, Alexander Wurz , Eddie Irvine and Giancarlo Fisichella . Villeneuve was only able to place tenth, right in front of Damon Hill . It is the 34th time that McLaren has occupied the front row.
All drivers were placed within four seconds.
Warm-up
For the fourth time, Häkkinen set the fastest time with 1: 19.394 ahead of Coulthard. McLaren thus set the fastest and second-best times in every session, each with at least one second ahead of the third-placed driver. This time Irvine took third place ahead of Schumacher, followed by Rubens Barrichello , Villeneuve, Frentzen and Wurz.
All drivers were placed within three and a half seconds.
run
When the race started, Häkkinen was able to successfully defend his pole position and also successfully pull away. After the first lap, the lead between Häkkinen and the second Coulthard was one second and three seconds before the third Frentzen. Ralf Schumacher turned out before he had even finished a lap. His brother didn't fare any better as he fell behind teammate Irvine at the start.
After 18 laps, the McLaren duo is around 23 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher, who has now overtaken his teammate. But in the next lap the Ferrari team screwed up the German's pit stop. Only after a standing time of 13.6 seconds, around twice as long as normal, could he drive back towards the pit exit. On the start-finish straight, Alexander Wurz overtook Frentzen with an excess of slipstream, while Schumacher was able to accelerate out of the pit lane again. At the end of the pit lane, however, Schumacher was able to defend his fourth place despite the unsuccessful pit stop.
The rest of the race wasn't particularly spectacular, the McLarens were simply overwhelming the other teams. Neither Ferrari nor the world championship team from last year, Williams, can counteract the dominance.
Damon Hill was subsequently disqualified because the car was underweight.
