training
Friday training
With a time of 1: 13.703 minutes, David Coulthard drove the fastest lap, only about a thousandth ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and four hundredths ahead of Mika Häkkinen. The two Ferraris took seventh and eighth place, with Schumacher around seven tenths in seventh place. All drivers were placed within four and a half seconds.
Saturday training
Once again Coulthard achieved the fastest time, around two seconds faster than the day before, closely followed by Häkkinen. Irvine followed in third place, almost a second behind, Frentzen in fourth and Schumacher in fifth. All timed drivers were within three and a half seconds.
Qualifying
It started raining at the beginning of qualifying, and it wasn't until the end of the session that the track gradually dried out. Fisichella was the only one able to set a time below 1:30 minutes and took pole position ahead of Alesi, Häkkinen and Schumacher. Coulthard, who has dominated both practice sessions so far, could not cope with the wet track and only placed 14th. All placed drivers were within five and a half seconds.
Warm-up
In the warm-up, both McLaren took the first two places again, followed by around a second by the Ferraris with Schumacher in third place. Fisichella, who had reached pole position on Saturday in difficult conditions, only came in eighth.
run
Panis stopped at the start because his clutch failed. Meanwhile, Häkkinen started the best and took the lead before the first corner. Meanwhile, complete chaos broke out behind it, where many drivers collided. The trigger was Takagi, whose car broke with the rear when braking for the first corner. He touched the pit wall and hit Herbert with the rear end first. In turn two, Diniz spun while braking, like Takagi, and drove sideways into his teammate Salo. Among other things, Coulthard was hit and also spun. When Salo tried to turn with oversteer, he got into Coulthard's front wing and destroyed his right rear tire. Due to the chaos in both corners, the safety car was sent out onto the track.
At the restart, Häkkinen defended his lead and led the race from Schumacher, who was just behind him. Schumacher tried to pass Häkkinen in turn four, but misjudged himself and was briefly overtaken by Fisichella. While Barrichello almost got past Schumacher, he had to give up early due to braking problems. Schumacher was on a two-stop strategy and absolutely had to pass Häkkinen, who was driving with a one-stop strategy. When Schumacher tried to overtake Häkkinen again at corner four, he braked again and this time slipped out into the gravel. Due to the high speed, the car was shaken violently, whereupon the front wing broke away. When Schumacher picked up a new nose in the pits, he was almost a lap behind the leading Mika Häkkinen.
front. Michael Schumacher then tried for a long time to get past his brother Ralf, who resisted doggedly. After several laps, Michael Ralf Coulthard and Schumacher started a race to catch up from the back of the field, but Frentzen's engine and Fisichella's and Alesi's accident caused them to overtake quickly and began to catch up on third-placed Irvine, who was suffering from alleged braking problems. Five laps before the end of the race, Schumacher was able to overtake Irvine in front of the Remus curve and take third place. After the race, Norbert Haug smugly commented on the scenes surrounding Irvine's braking problems:
"What? Yes, that happens towards the end of the race, when you accelerate so much and brake so late. "
Haug was alluding to Irvine's brakes, among other things, which enabled Schumacher to take third place.
