The Neuklosterholz is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Buxtehude in the Stade district .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 323 is around 260  hectares . Most of the nature reserve is also designated as an FFH area of ​​the same name . In the nature reserve parts of the 1976 reported, around 628 hectare nature sanctuary " Neukloster Forst risen". The area has been under nature protection since March 16, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Stade.

The nature reserve is located west of Buxtehude on the edge of the Zevener Geest . It places a near-natural oak-beech forest under protection as a historically old forest location with up to 200 year old trees. The beech forests are primarily defined as grove beech forest, sometimes also as woodruff beech forest. In some places oak forests falter. The grove beech forests accommodate u. a. Bracken , Witchweed , Forest Honeysuckle , Big Chickweed , Multi-flowered Weisswurz , Big Witch Herb and sometimes Wood Anemone . Coniferous forests are only available to a limited extent. The forests have been managed by the Lower Saxony State Forests since 1991 according to the LÖWE principles (long-term ecological forest development).

Along the Mühlenbach, which flows through the area in a deeply incised valley, swelling alder, ash and softwood alluvial forest , etc. a. with black alder , red alder and common ash . In the south, grassland areas on the Mühlenbach are included in the nature reserve. In the north of the nature reserve, the Mühlenbach is dammed up into several ponds , the Neukloster Mühlenteiche, which are used as fish ponds . The valley area is often waterlogged here, the floodplain forests partially merge into swamp forests . Here z. B. Marsh Sedge and Marsh Marigold .

The forest communities in the nature reserve have a high proportion of old wood and dead wood . The Kronskamp, ​​a clearing used for agriculture in the Neuklosterholz , is due to its importance u. a. included in the nature reserve as a hunting ground for bats .

The nature reserve is the habitat of species-rich flora and fauna. Over 60 species of birds breed here, including hawk , sparrowhawk , black woodpecker , stock dove , common raven , jackdaw , pied flycatcher and treecreeper . Mühlenbach and ponds are the kingfisher's habitat . The nature reserve is home to several species of bats, including Noctule , brown long-eared , Breitflügel- , water and common pipistrelle , also come salamander and alpine newt before. The dormouse , which was released into the wild by the district forester at the time, is also native . The forest area is home to numerous invertebrates such as beetles , spiders , butterflies , wild bees and snails . The mill ponds are home to the great pond clam . Over 350 fern and flowering plants and over 370 types of mushrooms have been identified in the nature reserve .

In the nature reserve there are several large stone graves , burial mounds and historical cross and boundary stones , which means that the area is of great importance from an archaeological and historical point of view. There are several cultural monuments in the nature reserve .

East of the Neukloster-Forst-Weg, which crosses the nature reserve, the Friedwald Buxtehude was established in 2006 on around 77 hectares . There is a military cemetery and a memorial to the fallen in the vicinity of the mill ponds . In the east, an association runs a forest kindergarten on the edge of the nature reserve .

The nature reserve borders the Buxtehude districts of Neukloster and Hedendorf in the north. Partly it is crossed at the edge of the federal highway 73 running here . In the east it goes into further forests of the Neuklosterholz, to the south there are agricultural areas, which together form the remaining part of the landscape protection area "Neukloster Forst".
