Elbe and islands is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon communities of Jork , Grünendeich , Steinkirchen and Hollern-Twielenfleth in the joint community of Lühe , Drochtersen , Freiburg , Wischhafen , Krummendeich and Balje in the joint community of Nordkehdingen and the city of Stade in the Stade district .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 345 is approximately 7644  hectares and consists of about 6000 hectares of water. It is completely part of the FFH area "Lower Elbe". Around 5130 hectares are also designated as an EU bird sanctuary "Lower Elbe". The previous nature reserves " Borsteler Binnenelbe and Großes Brack ", " Hahnöfersand " and " Neßsand " in the municipality of Jork, " Schwarztonnensand " in the municipality of Drochtersen, " Allwördener Außenendeich / Brammersand " in the municipalities of Freiburg and Wischhafen, " Außenendeich Nordkehdingen II " in the Municipalities of Krummendeich and Freiburg, " Außenendeich Nordkehdingen I " in the municipality of Balje, " Vogelschutzgebiet Hullen " in the municipality of Belum and parts of the nature reserve " Wildvogelreservat Nordkehdingen " in the municipality of Balje as well as the previous landscape protection area "Lühesand" in the municipalities of Hollern and Steinkirchen went in Scope of the Nature Conservation Ordinance. The nature reserve borders east of Drochtersen on the nature reserve “ Asselersand ” and from north of Freiburg on the nature reserve “ Lower Saxony estuary of the Elbe ”. At the Oste estuary, it borders on the nature reserve " Lower Oste " east of the Ostemündung to the nature reserve "wild bird sanctuary Nordkehdingen" and west of it to the nature reserve " Hadelner and Belumer outside the dikes ." In the east it borders on the “ Mühlenburger Loch / Neßsand ” nature reserve in Hamburg and the “Neßsand” nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein to the west and the “ Elbinsel Pagensand ” nature reserve in front of Bützfleth . In addition, opposite Wedel it borders on the landscape protection area “LSG des Kreis Pinneberg” and before Drochtersen with the landscape protection area “Kollmarer Marsch”. The area has been under nature protection since December 21, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Stade.

The nature reserve extends along the Elbe in the Stade district. It protects the course of the Elbe and the outer dyke areas in the Stade district from the state border to Hamburg to the mouth of the East. At Jork, the inland dyke area of ​​the former nature reserve “Borsteler Binnenelbe and Großes Brack” with the Borsteler Binnenelbe, Großer Brack and Jorker Hauptwetter up to Kreisstraße 39 and at Grünendeich the inland dyke meander of the Lühe is included in the nature reserve. In some places, outer dike areas have been removed from the scope of the nature conservation ordinance, so u. a. the area of ​​the marina near Neuenschleuse, the orchard and the industrial park near Grünendeich and, over a large area, the area from Twielenfleth to Grauerort. Here are u. a. the former Stade nuclear power plant and the industrial and port facilities in Bützfleth. The area of are also removed from the scope of the Nature Protection Ordinance prison Hahnöfersand on Hahnöfersand and weekend house area and camping on the Lühesand. The outer dike area of ​​Asseler Sands is protected as part of the " Asselersand " nature reserve .

Flora and fauna

The reserve comprises the tidal region of the Unterelbe with the water surfaces of the same, current poor, islands and sands. The dike areas are subject to the influence of the tides and the dynamics of the Elbe and are structured in a variety of ways. So here are fresh and brackish water Watten , reed areas, riparian forests , salt marshes and grasslands trained. The grasslands are subject to different degrees of use. Riparian forests are particularly growing on the islands. On the Elbe islands Neßsand and Hanskalbsand as well as Schwarztonnensand, lean grass grows on large areas of sand , which acts as a substitute habitat for no longer existing drift sand fields and dunes . The nature reserve is the habitat of the hemlock water fennel . Its largest occurrence is in the area of ​​the tidal biotope of the Hahnöfer Sand. The Elbe is part of the habitat for seals , porpoises and otters . It houses and is a walking corridor for various fish and round-mouthed fish , including feint , asp , Atlantic salmon , sea ​​trout , eel , brook , river and sea ​​lamprey . The Elbe is a potential habitat for the North Sea beak and the sturgeon . The reserve is the habitat and feeding habitat a diverse Avifauna , including pipe and Harrier , Short-eared , river and Tern , Ruff , Säbelschnäbler , Bekassine , peewit , Rotschenkel , Uferschnepfe , Plover , bittern , Corncrakes , Knäk- , Krick- , spoon and Gadder duck , potted mullet , water rail , white-starred bluethroat , whinchat , skylark , wagtail , reed bunting as well as pond and reed warbler . The Pioneer Island in Grünendeich houses the largest gulls colony in Germany and the largest gulls colony in Northern Europe. In the area at the mouth of the East (former nature reserve "Vogelschutzgebiet Hullen"), terns and black-headed gulls form important breeding colonies.

The Lower Elbe is an important resting and wintering area for various waders and water birds , u. a. for gray , barnacle , white- tailed and shelduck , humped , whooper and dwarf swan , teal, whistle, pintail and shoveler, black-headed gull, curlew, whimbrel , avocet, lapwing, redshank, golden , sand- and Lapwing Ringed Plover and Dark Sandpiper .

The area is a feeding habitat for sea ​​eagles and white storks .
