About this picture

Freiburg / Elbe ( Fryborg in Low German ) is a Lower Saxon town in the Stade district and belongs to the municipality of Nordkehdingen .

geography

Geographical location

Freiburg is located on the south-west bank of the Elbe , approximately at the height of river kilometer 682. The area is located very far north within the Stade district. As the crow flies, it is 27 km to Stade and 40 km to Cuxhaven. The nearest larger town Glückstadt is on the other side of the Elbe in Schleswig-Holstein and can be reached with the Elbe ferry Glückstadt-Wischhafen .

Neighboring communities

Along the Elbe, Freiburg (separated by the river) borders the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Brokdorf and Wewelsfleth . On the Lower Saxony side, Wischhafen in the southeast, Oederquart in the south and Krummendeich in the west are neighboring communities of Freiburg.

Community structure

In addition to the main town, the districts of Allwörden and Schöneworth belong to the municipality. Other places to live are Allwördenerdeich, Esch, Kurzenende, Laack, Langenhof, Neuensteden, Rutenstein and parts of Stellenfleth.

history

Freiburg, originally an island landscape on the Lower Elbe, is located in the Kehdinger Land. Pliny the Elder , who reached the Elbe with a Roman fleet under the command of the general Drusus, reported on riparian people who live mainly from fishing, making their nets from reeds and rushes. The spot was first mentioned in a document in 1154. In 1271 Archbishop Hildebold granted Freiburg city rights, which later dukes and bishops of the city confirmed several times. A document from 1474 states that Freiburg's city law has been aligned with that of the neighboring city of Stade. The city also had stacking and market rights. Freiburg belonged to the Archdiocese of Bremen until 1648 . After the Thirty Years' War , the Kingdom of Bremen-Verden in the Elbe-Weser triangle was awarded to Sweden in the Peace of Westphalia . In the Swedish-Brandenburg War from 1675 to 1676, an alliance of several states of the Holy Roman Empire and Denmark conquered Freiburg during the Bremen-Verden campaign , which remained in Allied ownership until the end of the war in 1679. In the Peace of Saint-Germain in 1679, Freiburg returned to Sweden, which it held until 1712. After a brief Danish rule until 1715, the area came to the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg ( Kurhannover ) in 1719 . During the Napoleonic era, Freiburg, like the entire Elbe-Weser triangle, was part of the French Empire . After the Wars of Liberation and the Congress of Vienna in 1814, the former Electorate of Hanover became the Kingdom of Hanover , which was annexed by Prussia in the German War in 1866 . Freiburg was thus under Prussian rule for 80 years, including when the German Empire was founded in 1871. After the Second World War , the state of Hanover was first re-established, to which Freiburg also belonged. Shortly afterwards, Freiburg and the state of Hanover became part of Lower Saxony in 1946. The first post-war years were also marked by the arrival of many refugees and displaced persons who came to the region from the former German eastern regions.

Freiburg (Elbe) was the seat of the district of Kehdingen until 1932 , after which it was integrated into the district of Stade (from January 1, 1939: district of Stade ).

Culture and sights

Buildings

The historic granary - today a cultural center
The old town center with the harbor

There are only a few architectural sights in the center itself. These include the St. Wulphardi Church and the harbor in the first place . The latter is also home to the new historical granary cultural center , a renovated storage building belonging to the former agricultural trading company . For a long time from the surrounding area, next to the church tower, the now dismantled high-level silo directly at the harbor was characteristic of the town's skyline .

A more modern construction is a radar tower at the mouth of the port priel and the Elbe . From here, guests have an excellent view of the large ocean-going container ships that sail the Elbe every day . On the opposite side of the port priel there is also the protected outer dike area of the Allwörden district ( Allwörden outer dyke / Brammer Sand nature reserve ).

Economy and Infrastructure

Shipyard in Freiburg

Freiburg does not have any major commercial enterprises. The number of commuters to the neighboring business locations around Stade , Cuxhaven , Bremerhaven and Hamburg is correspondingly high . Among the medium-sized companies there is a traditionally working boatyard that, among other things, manufactures and maintains Helgoland boat boats .

traffic

In private transport you can reach Freiburg / Elbe via the Obstmarschenweg . In this area it is part of the Deutsche Fährstraße and branches off in the neighboring municipality of Wischhafen from the federal highway 495 in a north-westerly direction. The federal highway represents an important infrastructural connection in a south-westerly direction for Freiburg. It connects the region of Nordkehdingen with the nearest central center Hemmoor .

A vehicle and passenger ferry runs regularly from Wischhafen to Glückstadt . The connection to the south, towards Stade , is only guaranteed via smaller, state and district roads. The same applies to the connection in the direction of Cuxhaven .

The narrow-gauge Kehdinger Kreisbahn , called "the Klütenbahn", after the "Kehdinger Klüten" (soup dumplings) that connected Freiburg (Elbe) with Stade and Itzwörden, was shut down and dismantled as early as 1936 (it then drove on the North Sea for a long time -Island of Sylt between List and Hörnum ). The former line of the railway in Kehdingen is served by a bus line from Stade.

port

View of the buildings at the port of Freiburg / Elbe

The tide-dependent Freiburg port is primarily used for water sports and modest fishing purposes. Access to the port is via the Freiburg harbor priel . A barrage was built in the 1970s to protect the coast . It delimits the port, which is located directly on the northeastern edge of the settlement area, from the approximately two-kilometer-long priel to the Elbe.

Public facilities

The town hall of the Fleckens and the joint municipality of Nordkehdingen have been located in Freiburg / Elbe since 1994. It is now housed in the former district court, a building from the 19th century in the center of the village. There is also the socio-cultural center "Historischer Kornspeicher" and the Elberadweg bicycle station with toilets, repair workshop, lockers and covered seating.

education

Secondary School

As a central location for Nordkehdingen, there are also several schools in the village. In addition to a kindergarten, these are a primary school, the secondary and secondary school of the integrated community and the Astrid Lindgren special school. The closest high schools are in Drochtersen, Hemmoor, Stade and Otterndorf .
