history

prehistory

Hammah 1 megalithic tomb , Hammah-Sterneberg

In 1913 a large stone grave was discovered in the moor between Hammah and Groß Sterneberg on the northern part of a sand island . The silting of the bog, which began at the beginning of the 20th century, revealed three other large stone graves as well as Bronze Age barrows, some of which were excavated in 1948 and 1983. A map from 1938 shows a considerable number of other barrows, most of which were destroyed. During the excavations were found bronze artifacts, such as a dagger, a pair of tweezers, a brooch and arrowheads from flint . Pollen analyzes by the Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research have shown that the surrounding raised bog was around 5000 BC. Began to grow and around 750 BC Has completely enclosed the grave monuments. Students from HafenCity University Hamburg under the direction of Thomas Kersten examined the moor in 2015 with a laser scanner , whereby four graves could be identified, another two are still unsecured.

Connection to the railway network (1881/82), credit institute

In the early 1880s, the cities between Hamburg-Harburg station and Cuxhaven were connected to the Niederelbebahn , including Hammah. From 1882 trains ran regularly on the route.

The Savings and Credit Bank eG Hammah was on 19 June 1923 as a savings and loan bank eGmuH founded in Hammah, where to this day their main office is located. This has improved the credit supply in rural areas.

World War II, prisoners of war

During the Second World War, prisoners of war were used in agriculture. This also applied to the Stade district. They were directly subordinate to the Wehrmacht and were housed in Stalags , most of them in Stalag X B Sandbostel . In Hammah, too, one of the 24 so-called “work detachments” set up in the district was set up to accommodate the prisoners close to the scene. In April 1944 there were 5,473 prisoners in the county area, on April 17, 1943 there were 20 prisoners in Hammah.
