The Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research ( NIhK ) is a research institute of the State of Lower Saxony for researching landscape development and settlement history in the area of ​​the southern North Sea, based in Wilhelmshaven .

The institute was founded in 1938 as the Provincial Office for Marsh and Wurten Research and renamed the Lower Saxony State Office for Marsh and Wurten Research in 1947 . In 1964 it was restructured into the Lower Saxony State Institute for Marsh and Wurten Research , and in 1988 the institute was given its current name. The NIhK is supported by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. The subject of the research is the landscape and settlement development of the Geest and marshland of north-western Lower Saxony since the Ice Age . The institute maintains a library with more than 60,000 specialist publications on its own work areas and folklore . The research results are presented in our own publications, lectures and the museums of the region such as the Museum Burg Bederkesa , Museum National Park House Fedderwardersiel , Coastal Museum Wilhelmshaven , Coastal Museum Juist , the East Frisian State Museum Emden and the Rheiderland Local History Museum .

The Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research is headed regularly by Felix Bittmann (current management 2019) and Hauke ​​Jöns .

The publication Settlement and Coastal Research in the Southern North Sea Region appeared up to Volume 32 (2008) under the title Problems of Coastal Research in the Southern North Sea Region (PdK). This journal presents the results of the archaeological, historical-geographical, geological and botanical work of the NIhK. In addition, in settlement and coastal research in the southern North Sea area, corresponding contributions to the entire area of ​​the southern North Sea coast are published by authors who do not belong to the NIhK.
