Brest is a municipality in the Stade district in Lower Saxony . It is the smallest member community of the Harsefeld joint community .

Geographical location

Brest is on the Stader Geest . The landscape is characterized by agriculture , green and arable areas , but also by forests, groups of trees and streams. The Kreyenmoor , Hammoor and Rehrsmoor moors are also located in the municipality . In the center of the municipality is the Im Tadel nature reserve .

Spatially, Brest is roughly halfway between Buxtehude (25 km) and Bremervörde (20 km). Hamburg is approx. 60 km away, Bremen approx. 85 km away. The closest basic centers are Bargstedt (5 km), Ahlerstedt (7 km) and Harsefeld (10 km).

Local division

The community consists of the three villages Brest, Reith and Wohlerst as well as the residential areas Am Subeck, Bredenbeck , Kirchbülten, Klein Reith , Klein Wohlerst and Lehnhorst.

history

Archaeological finds and the megalithic tombs near Reith suggest that there were settlements in the municipality in prehistory and early history . Finds made from clay marl in an old oven also confirm this.

In 1939, some Hamburg Jews were obliged to do closed labor , were assigned to the Emil Schmidt civil engineering and road construction company for earthworks and were housed in a camp in Wohlerst.

In 1970 the district of Wohlerst celebrated its millennium and in 1988 the district of Brest celebrated its 600th anniversary. The Dbod's Museum in Brest and the museum barn in Reith show parts of the past.

Regional affiliation

Before 1885 Brest belonged to Börde Bargstedt in the district of Harsefeld , after 1885 to the district of Stade and since 1932 to today's district of Stade .

The current congregation was established in 1972.

Place name

Old names of the place are 1388 Brecstede , 1467 Brestedt and 1500 Brestede . The meaning of the place name is probably identical to Bredstedt in Schleswig-Holstein. It stands for broad, extensive site or settlement.

Incorporations

Between 1964 and 1972 Brest was a member of the Bargstedt municipality . On July 1, 1972, Brest was created through the merger of the municipalities of Brest, Reith and Wohlerst. Since 1972 Brest has also been a member of the Harsefeld community.

Brest is evangelical-Lutheran and belongs to the parish of St. Primus Church in Bargstedt .

Municipal council

• In the local elections in 2006, the turnout in the municipality of Brest was 69.5 percent. The local council , consisting of nine seats , has since been composed as follows: CDU four seats (46.9 percent), SPD three seats (31.9 percent) and WG Brest two seats (21.2 percent).
• In the local elections on September 11, 2011, only the CDU and SPD ran. With a turnout of 67.8 percent, the SPD won 54.7 percent and received five seats. The CDU had four seats with 45.3 percent.
• In the local elections on September 11, 2016, twelve candidates ran for a joint citizens' list. Previous members of the council refrained from running for election, as did the new candidates. The turnout was 71.3 percent.

Culture and sights

Memorial to the war dead from Brest

The architecture of the OT Brest is dominated by new buildings, only relatively few older buildings have been preserved. Near the cemetery in OT Brest, the Brest dead of the two world wars and the Franco-German War of 1870/71 are commemorated. There is also a small brick chapel from the second half of the 20th century.

In the OT Brest there is a boulder in the center of the village in which the Brest coat of arms is carved.

Museums

Agricultural implements can be viewed in a museum barn in the Reith district. The change in the use of technology becomes particularly clear here. The Dbod's Museum in Brest shows old school desks, blackboards and old household items from the last 150 years and thus part of Brest's past.

Regular events

• Last Sunday in August: Flea market in the Reith district with over 500 stalls with visitors from all over the region. Due to the great demand, all municipal roads in Reith are occupied on this day.

Brest-Aspe train station

Brest is located on the county road 48. Between Brest and Aspe , the Brest-Aspe station is located in a separate settlement on the Bremerhaven – Buxtehude railway line .

Established businesses

The economic life of the community is shaped by agriculture . In addition to farms, there are some businesses specializing in agriculture , as well as a workshop that specializes in the restoration of Rolls-Royce vintage cars.

Another company has specialized in professional media technology. This includes digital media controls, telephone systems and satellite systems.

Wind farm

A wind farm was built in Brest at an early stage ; it and the biogas plant generate more electricity than is consumed. Repowering is planned for the next few years in order to increase efficiency.

Village community houses

Village community houses can be found in all three districts . The offer ranges from a fireplace room to a hall with a stage for around 120 seats. Fire brigades, hunting cooperatives, sports and dance groups can use the public meeting places, as there are no restaurants on site.

New development area

In 2014, a new development area was designated on the outskirts. Each parcel has an area of ​​around 1000 m², which allows for loose, spacious and individual residential development. The development will be moved into two construction phases and will serve the community's own development.
