The Stader Geest is a natural spatial unit in the north German lowlands . It occupies a large part of the Elbe-Weser triangle between the cities of Hamburg , Bremen , Verden (Aller) and Cuxhaven and is surrounded by the natural areas of Elbmarschen , Ems-Weser-Marschen , Weser-Aller-Flachland , Dümmer-Geestniederung and Ems- Hunte-Geest and Lüneburg Heath . In the numbering of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation it bears the number D27.

Natural allocation

In terms of natural space , the Stader Geest represents the greater region of the 3rd order and main unit group (number 63, two-digit) within the North German lowlands (greater region of the 1st order). It is divided into main units as follows (regions of the 4th order; three-digit):

The sparsely populated Stader Geest is characterized by sandy geest soils , natural river valleys and moors. The larger settlements are on the edge of the Geest and in the river lowlands, in particular of Wümme , Hamme and Oste as well as on the edge of the Elbe , Weser and Aller . The region is characterized by agriculture with animal breeding . Potatoes and asparagus are also often grown. Wind energy is generated in many places. Important traffic axes between Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven run through the area of ​​the Stader Geest, further traffic connections from Hamburg and Bremen to Hanover touch it in the east and south. In some cases, larger commercial enterprises have settled along these transport axes.

Political Affiliation

The area of ​​the Stader Geest belongs administratively to the districts of Osterholz , Verden , Cuxhaven , Rotenburg (Wümme) and Stade , which formerly formed the administrative district of Stade , as well as to small parts of the district of Harburg and the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven .
