The first church in Tostedt, one of the oldest wooden churches in northern Germany, has been located on the site of today's parish hall since around 800 AD.
Today's Johanneskirche in Tostedt was built between 1878 and 1880 based on a design by the Hanoverian master builder Conrad Wilhelm Hase . It is a five-aisled building in neo-Gothic style . The baptismal font made of bell bronze from 1423, the winged altar from 1480 and the Renaissance pulpit from 1608 were taken over from their predecessors . The organ by Philipp Furtwängler and the altar by Theodor Maßler date from the year the church was built.

Political particularities
For many years there was an active right-wing scene in Tostedt with comradely structures that tried hard to recruit young people. The center of these activities was a trendy shop on the right in the Todtglüsingen district. The Lower Saxony constitution protection agency regularly mentioned Tostedt as a “regional focus” with regard to “violent right-wing extremism”. At the same time there has been active civic engagement against xenophobic activities for many years. Among other things, organized by the local forum for moral courage and with the participation of many associations and foreign citizens, various citizens' festivals took place under the motto "Tostedt is colorful". At the same time, resistance to the trendy shop grew and traditionally encompassed politically neutral forces. In 2013, the trendy store then closed its store sale. In the meantime, church parishes, administration, police and politics as well as youth work together with the forum for moral courage are continuously doing intensive prevention work on site. In particular at the secondary schools in Tostedter - all three are entitled "School without Racism - School with Courage" - joint projects against the law have taken place in recent years, for example at the day of action for moral courage "Kick against the law", where a sign against racism and extremism was set. The communal cooperation is currently proving to be very successful in view of the approx. 600 refugees who have found refuge in the area of the integrated community: A large number of volunteers look after the refugees, help them in everyday life and give free German lessons. Particular points of contact are the regular international cafés in the Johannesgemeinde, the Catholic Herz-Jesu-Gemeinde and in the Christ Centrum Tostedt.
Art and music
The marching band of the Tostedt and Todtglüsingen rifle club and the Tostedt men's choir as well as other more regionally known groups, plays and bands have existed for over 150 years. In the field of church-classical music, the Johannes-Kantorei of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Community is well known.
Udo Lindenberg's “panic sons” Kieran and Lukas Hilbert grew up in Tostedt. Your band Future was Germany's youngest rock band, won the NDR-Hörfest in 1986 and received a recording contract with the then TELDEC company. The musician Erwin Hilbert was Udo Lindenberg's text advisor and private secretary for many years and brought him to a concert at the secondary school in Tostedt in 1989. Hilbert and his wife have been running the Kömo-Land artist initiative at the Königsmoorer Moorversuchsanstalt since 2015. He organized several art exhibitions, talk shows and music concerts for Tostedt and the surrounding area.

The most successful Tostedt sports clubs are the Todtglüsinger sports club, one of the five largest sports clubs in Lower Saxony with more than 6300 members and 70 sports, MTV Tostedt , which is part of the second women's table tennis league, and the Bundesliga baseball team of the Dohren Wild Farmers .
