Explanation of the place name

Old names of the place are 1296 Gherstede, 1316 Gerstedhe, 1317 Gerstede, 1321 Gherstede and 1330–52 Gherstede. In the base word of the place name there is undoubtedly the Low German “-sted (e)” for “place, settlement”. In the first part you can see “Ger-”, which is still known today as the miter and is derived from the Middle High German “gêre” for “long triangular piece”, Old High German “gêro” for “sea tongue, sea bay” and Middle Low German “gêre”. "Gêre" is attested as a field name everywhere in northern Germany.

Culture and sights

The varied landscape with forest, heather, meadow, mountain and valley is ideal for hiking, walking and cycling. Equestrian enthusiasts will also get their money's worth in the spacious area and international horse tournaments can be attended in the nearby Luhmühlen (district of Salzhausen ). The vicinity of the Luhe invites you to go hiking in the water with canoes, kayaks or folding boats, or to swim. In winter, when there is snow, young and old can have fun on the Hamberg on the toboggan run and end the day with the annual torch-lit tobogganing.

Regular events

The Garstedt Schützenfest is an annual event that always takes place in the last week of June of the year. During this four-day event, various marksman kings will be chosen. Usually this is done by imposition. Official kings of the rifle club are the rifle king, the queen queen, the youth king and the student king. In recent years, there have always been enough participants to appoint a marksman in each category.

The process: First of all, the rifle house, the festival area and the associated marquee are decorated a few days in advance. In addition, during the rifle festival you will find fairground-like stands, such as bumper cars or air rifle stands. The official start is on Thursday evening, when the Kommersmarsch starts in the neighboring town of Wulfsen . The rifle company marches from the inn to the Kleinbahn first to the Wulfsener and then to the Garstedt war memorial, where the deceased of the First and Second World Wars are celebrated. At around 9 p.m., the Kommersabend opens on Schützenplatz, which ends with a sociable end during the night. In the late afternoon of the following day, the fair-like stalls are finally opened. A tent disco takes place on Friday evening, attracting the younger generation. Perceived as an advantage or a disadvantage, the new Schützenkönig will be shot in the Schützenhaus on Saturday morning. The riflemen who intend to become king appear in uniform at 9:00 a.m. in front of the rifle house. In front of onlookers, the reigning kings are deloused and then the new kings are chosen.

Economy and Infrastructure

The local basic supply is guaranteed by grocery shopping on site. A doctor, pharmacy, banks, car company and gas station are available in the neighboring village of Wulfsen . In Salzhausen, 6 km away, there are further and more extensive shopping opportunities, including a hospital and secondary school types (secondary school, secondary school and grammar school). Garstedt has a kindergarten , a crèche and a primary school .

traffic

The cities of Winsen (Luhe) (~ 10 km), Lüneburg (~ 20 km) and Hamburg (~ 40 km) can be reached quickly. In addition, large cities such as Bremen or the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover can be reached in just under one and a half hours via the motorways. These places are also easy to reach with the help of public transport , as there is a good bus network in Garstedt.

In addition, Garstedt is on the Winsen – Hützel railway line , which is mainly used for freight traffic.
