Marxen is a municipality in the Harburg district in Lower Saxony .

Geographical location

Marxen is located on the northeastern edge of the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve . The municipality belongs to the joint municipality of Hanstedt , which has its administrative seat in the municipality of Hanstedt . In the west of the town, coming from the Lüneburg Heath, the floodplain flows into the Seeve.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are Jesteburg to the southwest and Seevetal to the north. To the east is the municipality of Hanstedt, which further borders on the joint municipality of Salzhausen.

history

Marxen was first mentioned in a document in 1239. Earlier spellings are Marsem (1239), Marxem (1450) and Marksen (around 1800). In 1450 Marxen belongs to the Goh Salzhausen. In 1681 Marxen consisted of nine full courtyards, one half courtyard, five koten and two brink seaters. Some of the previous owners of the old farms that still exist today can be traced back to the year 1540 (Klaas Hus). The remains of the hill and passage graves on the Jägerberg and on the right of the district road from Marxen in the direction of Ramelsloh suggest that the area around Marxen was already in the Bronze Age, i.e. from 2200 to 1200 BC. Was settled. Marxen lies in the former settlement area of ​​the Lombards . The area of ​​the Lüneburg Heath was called Golaida during the Lombard period . In 1452, the income from Marxen was assigned as security for a loan from the von dem Berge brothers from Lindhorst to the monastery in Ramelsloh .

Museums

The Marxen Fire Brigade Museum of the Harburg district is located in Marxen . This museum is open from May 1st to September 30th each year.

music

There are several choirs in Marxen. The Nordheide Choir e. V based in Marxen is a male choir. It is sung at weddings, birthdays and other occasions; the repertoire is extensive, from old pieces to modern ones. The annual autumn concert, which is held together with the Frauenchor Nordheide e. V. is organized. The Nordheide Choir includes the Kling and Klang Nordheide children's choir and the Kling and Klang Nordheide youth choir. The women's choir Nordheide e. V. is also based in Marxen. The songs range from ancient to modern compositions.

Monuments

In the village center there is a war memorial which was erected in 1913 and which commemorates the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. In 2013, it was dedicated by the Marxen community to lasting peace in Europe. In addition, a stone has been placed in Marxen to draw attention to the 750th anniversary of the community. It bears the inscription "750 years of Marxen - 1239-1989".

It is approx. 5 km to the Autobahn 7 junction in the neighboring municipality of Seevetal . The Thieshope motorway exit is also on the A7 and is approx. 6 km away.

Marxen used to have its own train station on the Wittenberge – Buchholz railway line , which was operated by freight until 1994. In 2000, all track systems between the former junction Jesteburg and Lüneburg were removed. Passenger traffic was switched to bus line 4408 as early as 1981, which today connects Marxen with Buchholz , Jesteburg and Winsen . For school bus services , there are also bus services to Brackel, Hanstedt, Buchholz, Winsen and Hittfeld.

In view of the rising energy costs, a reactivation of the railway line and the connection to the greater Hamburg area are being considered.

Established businesses

Marxen has an industrial area in which, among other things, the Fehr-Edelhoff company is located, which carried out waste disposal in the Harburg district until the end of 2007. In addition, the company Nikro Messebau is a company that is active in trade fair construction throughout Germany. There are also various small businesses in the industrial park. A second commercial area is the "Schünbusch Feld", which is marketed by the WLH (economic development company in the Harburg district). There is u. a. Mobilcentrum Lönnies GmbH, which adapts and converts series vehicles for people with disabilities. The village itself is home to the Schlichting agricultural machinery trade, other local businesses and two restaurants, one of which has a boarding house.

There are no schools in Marxen, but there is a kindergarten run by the German Red Cross and a crèche since 2020.
