Map of the Lüneburg Heath

Golaida is in the Origo Gentis Langobardorum ( Latin : origin of the Lombards dynasty ) and the Historia gentis Langobardorum (Latin: history of the Lombards) the designation of a Longobard settlement area, the location of which is to be equated with the Lüneburg Heath according to current scientific knowledge .

Geographical location

With the help of archaeological finds such as jewelry, weapons and grave goods, the Lombard settlement area in the Lüneburg Heath can be narrowed down north to the Elbe , east to the state forest of Göhrde , south to the headwaters of the Ilmenau and west to the Seeve .

history

The Origo Gentis Langobardorum , the tribal legend of the Longobards recorded in writing in the 7th century, as well as the Historia gentis Langobardorum written by Paulus Diaconus in the late 8th century report that the Longobards took possession of Golaida after their departure from Scoringa . There are no reliable annual figures for this conquest. Only around the years 3 BC BC to 5 AD, ancient historians describe the Lombards tribe and their settlement area on the Elbe for the first time.

The presence of the Longobards had a lasting impact on this region. In the 13th century, part of the Lüneburg Heath was called Bardengau ; the name of the main town Bardowick is also likely to be traced back to the Lombards.
