The first historical fire engines were initially collected in a barn of a former farm, and the barn was converted for museum operations. The museum, which opened in July 1987, became a branch of the open-air museum on Kiekeberg in agreement with the Harburg district .

In 2013 the exhibition area was expanded by 100 m² of covered area and the fire brigade museum was renovated. The renovation was made possible by grants from the European Union (ZILE funding, grants for integrated rural development), the Harburg district , the Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude foundation and the Lüneburg Landscape Association .
