The name Bennedesthorp / Bendestorf is a complex place name that consists of the elements Bennedes and -thorp. The basic word thorp is based on Old Saxon thorp, Middle Low German dorp, meaning “village, farmstead”. As the original first element of the name Bennid, first names in Bern, such as Bernhard, Beringer, Berinher, Beringard, Berinfried (and others) come into question. The first link is based on Old High German bero, Old Saxon bera "bear" and the short form Bennid as well as the common name Benno originated from the assimilation of the -r- to the following -n-. Assimilation is a natural process within any language.
