Barbara Bartos-Höppner

Barbara Bartos-Höppner (born November 4, 1923 in Eckersdorf , Bunzlau district , Silesia ; † July 7, 2006 in Nottensdorf , Stade district ) was a German writer who mainly wrote books for children and young people .

Life

Barbara Bartos-Höppner grew up in Silesia. After finishing school, she worked in her parents' hotel in Reichenbach / OL near Görlitz . At the end of the Second World War she had to leave her home and came to Tostedt in the Lüneburg Heath , later to Hamburg and Buxtehude . First she wrote down experiences from the war and memories of her Silesian homeland. In 1956 she published her first stories We want to make friends, Nina and The Daughters of the King Farmer .

A number of historical novels followed, most of which were set in Asia. These included the Cossacks against Kuchum Khan , who describes the conquest of the Siberian Khanate from the perspective of a young Cossack under Yermak Timofejewitsch , and Rescue the Great Khan , who deals with the same events, but from the perspective of a young Tartar under Kütschüm Khan . Kosaken gegen Kutschum-Khan made it onto the list of the best for the German Youth Book Prize and won the New York Herald Tribune Children's Spring Book Festival Prize.

Bartos-Höppner was very successful with the children's book character Schnüpperle she created and the anthology series Stories of Our Time . In 1970 she was the first German author of young adult books to be accepted into the PEN Center Germany . Her stories found their way into school books from various publishers, and she was also involved in promoting reading for elementary and special schools. Her books have been translated into eighteen languages.

Barbara Bartos-Höppner lived in Nottensdorf / Niederelbe from 1969 until her death . Her grave is in the cemetery of the St. Petri community in Buxtehude . The literary estate is in the university library of the Technical University of Braunschweig.
