The Wesermünde Geest is a collective term for several, mutually separate through wetlands Geest back in the west of the district Cuxhaven and in North Bremen . The Saale Ice Age terminal moraine areas have heights between 10 and 74  m above sea level. NN and carry forest and arable land in a loose mixture. In the wetlands with heights between 0 and m , grassland predominates .

Natural structure

The natural spatial main unit of the Wesermünder Geest is part of the main unit group Stader Geest (number 63, two-digit) within the North German lowlands (large region 1st order).

According to the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany (sheets 56 - Bremen and 39 - Bremerhaven) the Wesermünder Geest is divided into the following natural spatial units:

  • Wesermünder Geest (633)
    • 633.0 Osterholzer Geest

Geographical location

Topographic map of the Osterholzer Geest, the southern part of the Wesermünder Geest

The Wesermünder Geest is bordered in the south by the river Lesum in the northern part of Bremen , in the west it borders on the marshland Osterstade (on the Unterweser south of Bremerhaven ) and Land Wursten (on the outer Weser north of Bremerhaven). In the north the Wesermünde Geest is by the Elbmarschen belonging Land Hadeln and the Elbe estuary at Cuxhaven completed. The eastern border is formed by the rivers Oste to the city of Bremervörde and Hamme with the Teufelsmoor near Osterholz-Scharmbeck . To the east of these rivers is the Zevener Geest , which, like the Wesermünder Geest, is part of the Stader Geest natural area . In the Gnarrenburg area, the two geest landscapes converge and mark a historically significant transition through the otherwise difficult-to-cross bogs of the Hamme and Osteniederung, which had to be overcome on the way from Bremen to Hamburg.

About 10 km south of the city limits of Bremerhaven the Weser tributary Lune and its lowland cuts through the Wesermünder Geest. The part located south of the Lune is called Osterholzer Geest and is mostly in the Osterholz district . The altitudes of this part of the Geest, sometimes over 40  m, form the Bremen Switzerland , the Lange Heide and the Eulenberg between Brillit and Basdahl . Numerous Geestrand brooks arise here, including the Giehler Bach, which forms the upper reaches of the Hamme, and the Drepte .

The northern part of the Wesermünder Geest is largely in the district of Cuxhaven . In the western part near Lamstedt in the Westerberg area over 60  m and in the Wingst near Cadenberge even around 74  m , which corresponds to the highest point within the Wesermünder Geest. Its part north of the Geeste river is criss-crossed by numerous lowlands and moors and only reaches heights of a maximum of about 30  m in the area south of Bederkesa and in the Wurster Heide . The north-western part of the Geest, which extends from Bremerhaven-Lehe to Cuxhaven-Altenwalde , forms the Hohe Lieth or Wurster Heide.

Landscape and vegetation

In addition to intensive grassland use, arable farming is carried out on the Geest. Numerous coniferous forests are also used for forestry. The raised bogs in the northern part of the Geest are largely pitted. Near-natural deciduous forests and numerous heather areas can also be found in the higher altitudes. The countless rivers and brooks that cut the ridges of the Geest form lowlands in which fens can be found. To preserve the Beckedorfer Beeke, the state of Bremen has set up a nature reserve in such a lowland.

Surname

The name Wesermünder Geest goes back to the former Prussian city of Wesermünde , which between 1924 and 1947 consisted of most of what is now Bremerhaven. It was the administrative seat of the district of the same name , in whose area most of the Wesermünder Geest was located. On August 1, 1977, the Wesermünde district was dissolved in favor of the newly founded Cuxhaven district. The name Wesermünder Geest is still in use.
