Osterholzer Geest
The Osterholzer Geest is a wavy, sandy moraine area between the cities of Bremen , Bremerhaven and Bremervörde .
geography
The Osterholzer Geest forms the southern part of the Wesermünder Geest . In the west it borders on the marshland called Osterstade on the east bank of the Lower Weser and in the east on the Hammeniederung with the Teufelsmoor . In the north it merges into the ridge of the Geest, broken by lowlands, between the coastal marsh Land Wursten and the Oste , which forms the northern part of the Wesermünder Geest. In the south it extends as a high bank to the rivers Weser and Lesum . This sharp Geestrand continues northeast through the municipality of Ritterhude and the district town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck to the area of Bremervörde. There the Osterholzer Geest touches the Zevener Geest near Karlshöfen . The yoke that these two ridges form at this point goes back to an ice-age glacier gate and represents the northern end of the Hamme glacial valley, in whose lowlands the Teufelsmoor has formed.
The northern and western Geestrands, on the other hand, are flat and merge into the Beverstedter Moorgeest in the northwest in the Bremerhaven area . The highest height above sea level is reached at 48 m on the Long Heath between Osterholz-Scharmbeck and Garlstedt .
administration
The greater part of the landscape is part of the district Osterholz , the north to the district of Cuxhaven and Rotenburg (Wümme) , the southwest to the city of Bremen Bremen-Nord . The Geest area between Bremen-Nord and the district of Osterholz is also known as Bremen Switzerland .
Settlement and vegetation
In the south of the Osterholzer Geest there is a settlement band consisting of Schwanewede , Bremen-Nord , Ritterhude and Osterholz-Scharmbeck. The rest is sparsely populated. About half consists of arable land, almost a third is covered with forest, mostly coniferous forest . Part of the forest area near Garlstedt and Schwanewede is not open to the public for military reasons.
Cultural monuments
In the summer of 1982 a comprehensive inventory was carried out in the city and district of Osterholz-Scharmbeck by a working group for the preservation of monuments. It was known that (compared to the 19th century) a large number of sites, especially due to the increasing settlement of the area, had to be considered destroyed. A review of the records of the former district home keeper H. Fitschen, the archaeological survey of the land by HJ Killmann (former soil conservation department in the administrative office) and the years of observation by KP Schultz (head of the district home museum Osterholz) should be carried out in order to clarify the actual existence and gain its condition. According to this, the following aboveground visible monuments were located in the district and city area:
- 9 large stone graves
- Large stone grave Osterholz-Scharmbeck
- Hünensteine near Axstedt
- Stone chamber near Meyenburg
- 361 burial mounds (e.g. in the Neegenbargsheide north of Schwanewede and near Oldenbüttel)
- 8 fixings
- 249 Wurten
- 4 cup stones
- 12 other objects
- Environment and prehistory trail "Seemoor" near Steden
All nine large stone graves are located on the Osterholzer Geest . Based on the numerous characteristic ceramic finds in these facilities, this prehistoric phase is known as the funnel beaker culture .
