The Brockhaus defines Osterstade as the original "Oststedingen" (the eastern part of the area inhabited by the Stedinger ). Whereby the word Osterstade is only the Low German name for Upper German: "Eastern shore / shore".

The Osterstader Marsch is located in the districts of Cuxhaven and Osterholz and borders in the north on Landwürden and in the east on Bremen Switzerland , part of the Osterholzer Geest . It is divided into Norder-Osterstade and Süder-Osterstade. The first-mentioned part includes the places Büttel , Neuenlande , Rechtenfleth and Sandstedt as well as the districts Neuenlandermoor, Rechtenflether Moor, Rechtenflether Feldhof, Reepen and Sandstedter Moor. In Süder-Osterstade there are Offenwarden , Rechtebe , Wersabe ,Wurthfleth , Uthlede , Aschwarden , Rade , Hinnebeck and the districts Rechtsber Moor, Wersaber Moor, Cleve, Bruch and Hassel and the northern part of Meyenburg .

Like the marsh land dignities Vieland and parishes Lehe and Stotel was Easter Stade medieval Frisian populated. The name Osterstade is still in use today by water and dyke entertainment associations.

history

By 1212 at the latest, the villages of Osterstades joined the Stedinger peasant republic that was established west of the Weser . With the intention of collecting taxes in this area as well, the Bremen Archbishop Gerhard II proceeded extremely brutally. He had the entire population of Stedingen and Osterstade declared heretics by the Bremen Synod of Lent in 1230/31 and reached Pope Gregory IX with the most absurd accusations . permission to call a crusade .

The first crusade in 1233 was only successful in Osterstade because the peasantry from the western bank of the Weser, as well as the previously allied Bremen city republic, failed to meet their alliance obligations. During the 2nd crusade in 1234, the West Stedingers were defeated ( Stedinger War ; Battle of Altenesch ) and, like the Osterstader in the previous year, a large part of the population was murdered, expelled or robbed of their rights by the Archbishop's troops.
