University thesis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In German-speaking countries, university publications are those that were written as "part of a university examination and for obtaining an academic degree". These include: Bachelor theses , diploma theses , master theses , master theses , licensed theses , dissertations and habilitation theses . Editions published in a publishing house are treated bibliographically in the same way as "real" university publications (without a publisher or publishing corporation - then stating the university). "Real" university publications are the works as they are submitted for examination. Often dissertations (and habilitations) are published by a publisher at a later point in time.

Not all university publications have to be published and can therefore be recorded bibliographically. This is regulated by the respective examination regulations of the universities. In Austria, the University Act 2002 stipulates that the thesis must be published - for diploma theses, a printed copy must be placed in the university library. The minimum number of publication copies for dissertations is also regulated by the respective examination regulations. In the case of self-publication , the number of deposit copies (60 or 80 pieces) must be made available to the university or university library. It is not recommended for young researchers aiming for a university career. In the case of printing and distribution by a publisher, attention must be paid to the minimum number of copies set out in the doctoral regulations, which is often 150. A number of specimen copies (between 3 and 10) must be deposited with the Dean's Office or Examination Office. A variant of this is book-on-demand - the book is only printed when there are interested parties, which reduces storage costs. If a publisher is used, the work is given an ISBN and is available from the publisher in bookshops. If the doctoral regulations allow, the publication can also be in electronic form. For Habilitationsschriften other regulations apply, a general publication requirement does not exist.

Dissertations and habilitation theses are increasingly being published online. Often other academic papers are also made available on the so-called university font servers (also known as repositories ) of the university libraries.

Germany

University libraries submit dissertations and - if they receive them - post-doctoral theses to the German National Library , which registers them in its H series : H series - University publications. Dissertations and habilitation theses from German universities and German-language dissertations and habilitation theses from abroad, regardless of their form. Main part with register, appears monthly (DNB website). The university publications delivered online can be found as online publications with their metadata in the OPAC of the German Library.
