history

Surname

In 1182 Ritterhude was first mentioned as Hude ( Low German Hu'e ) in a document from the Osterholz monastery. The Hude places belong to a group of less existing place names such as Hude (Oldenburg) or Hude (North Friesland) . In addition, a few hundred prefixes (prefixes) and suffixes (suffixes) have been formed for place names that are common in northern Germany, the Netherlands (-hijde) and England (-hithe).

middle Ages

The von der Hude family was first mentioned in a document in 1185. The Burg Huda served 1309 according to the Bremer Urkundenbuch , to guard the ford on the Hammering as single Heerweg from Hamburg to Bremen. In 1380 the knights and squires of the Hude vowed that “ounce slot” should be an open lock and so it escaped destruction.

Modern times

According to the oldest register of free dams , 52 families lived on Damthor Hude in 1568 . According to the treasury and contribution description, the number rose to 89 families by 1635.

In 1712 a major fire destroyed 56 buildings, including a water mill. In 1757 the castle and the dam bridge were destroyed in the Seven Years' War .

Dammgut Ritterhude

In 1774, after the death of Friedrich August von der Hude, the last of his tribe in Ritterhude, Georg Gröning , later councilor, senator and mayor of Bremen, acquired the dam. He and his son Heinrich v. Gröning, also the mayor and president of the higher court in Bremen, converted the restored moated castle into a mansion, which they expanded into a three-wing building by adding the north wing. Descendants (family of Rex von Gröning) live there to this day.

In 1850 the Ritterhude court was united with the towns of Ritterhude, Osterhagen-Ihlpohl and Werschenrege (with Erve, Loge, Ovelgönne), Heilshorn, Hülseberg / Isehorn, Buschhausen and Vor-Scharmbeckstotel with the Osterholz office. In 1854 a local council could be elected for the first time in Ritterhude.

20th and 21st centuries

At the beginning of the 20th century the following buildings were built: the gymnasium in 1912, the Linden pharmacy in 1925 , the parsonage with confirmation hall in 1927, the Riess school in 1930 and the post office in 1931. In addition, the road between the castle bridge and the north side was expanded around 1926/30.

From 1929 the number of unemployed in Ritterhude rose rapidly. The global economic crisis cast its shadow, almost 30 percent of the approximately 2400 Ritterhuder had to live from public funds at the end of 1932. The NSDAP appeared for the first time with 29 votes in the Reichstag election in December 1924 . In September 1930 it reached 183 and in July 1932 488 votes, but fell in the election on November 6, 1932 by almost half (257) and thus considerably more than on the Reich scale. In Ritterhude, the NSDAP did not come close to the top scores of the SPD. And although Hitler came to power on January 30, 1933, the SPD remained the leading party in Ritterhude until the Reichstag election in March 1933 . But it did not offer much organized resistance. The DZP, DDP and DVP did not play a major role in the Ritterhuder elections. In 1920/1924 the DHP still received around 200 - presumably peasant - votes, but after that it went steeply downhill. The right-wing DNVP had an average of only 80 voters until 1930, but the number rose from the July 1932 election. In November 217 Ritterhuder voted for her. Like the NSDAP, it probably benefited from the bourgeois electorate's trend to the right.

The mayor of Bremen-Lesum, Sturmhauptführer Fritz-Johann Köster, personally drove the Jewish Ritterhude family ter Berg into the Hamme valley during the Night of the Reichspogrom in 1938. The SA men took the family by car from Köster to an open field to be shot. In the end, however, Köster and his troop leader did not dare to shoot all family members. Instead, they let the ter Bergs go by firing a blank shot (source: Götz Aly: The persecution and murder of European Jews by National Socialist Germany 1933–1945. Vol. 2 ″, p. 391).

In 1999 the multi-purpose hall was converted into an event center. The town hall from 1927 was rebuilt in 2000. Since 2004, Ritterhude has officially been allowed to use the Low German place name Hu'e on the entrance boards .

On the evening of September 9, 2014, a severe detonation on the premises of a local waste disposal company damaged around 40 houses in a neighboring residential area. A company employee died about a week later from injuries sustained as a result of the detonation.
