History, tasks

On June 14, 1991, Bremen and its neighboring communities founded the Lower Saxony / Bremen Association in the form of an association in order to strengthen the cooperation between the then 24 members. Each member has one vote in the association. In several working groups founded at that time (which no longer exist in this form today) for housing construction / settlement planning, culture, environment and health / social affairs, problems are to be reduced in an "early warning system" and common improvements. According to the statutes, the area of ​​the association is to be structurally strengthened economically. He is u. a. Member of the working group regional associations in metropolitan areas . The Green Ring Region Bremen was developed in the municipal association and introduced in 2003. The municipal association has been involved in regional development and planning in the INTRA project (inter-municipal spatial structure concept for the Bremen region) since 2005. For the region, which is characterized by numerous administrative borders, the municipal association provides the important parameters of the region with over 100 indicators with demographic monitoring and regional monitoring.

In 2016 the association had 28 members. Currently (2016) 1.05 million people live in the network, that is 40 percent of the population in the Northwest Metropolitan Region .

Andreas Bovenschulte , Mayor of Weyhe, has been chairman of the association since 2014 . Carsten Sieling , Mayor and President of the Senate of Bremen, is the deputy chairman . The office is based in Delmenhorst .
