history

The Battle of Altenesch
(miniature in the Saxon World Chronicle , 13th century)
Not north-facing map with the Stedinger Land

The first documentary mention refers to 1063, when the still uninhabited area of Aldenabrock passed into the possession of the church by King Heinrich IV . With the establishment of the Weser dike around 1100, the actual settlement of the land on the shore began, mainly by the Frisians - hence the name Stedingen . Excessive taxes ( tithe ) caused the feud with the Archbishop of Bremen and led to the freedom struggle of the Stedinger Frisians. In the Battle of Altenesch on May 27, 1234, the Stedinger were defeated by a superior army of crusaders with participants from all over Europe.

Lemwerder, like all of Stedingen, was hit by over 50 devastating storm surges. The Nobiskuhle, which was torn down in 1478, testifies to one of these natural disasters in the Braake district. Due to the flood disaster of 1962, extensive flood protection measures were implemented.

The ferry connection between Lemwerder and Vegesack has existed since the Middle Ages . By contract between Oldenburg and Bremen in 1576 it was determined that the people of Bremen should keep the ferry.

From 1500 to 1862 Lemwerder provided by far the largest proportion of all Arctic sea crews for seal and whaling. The descendants found work in the increasingly growing boat and shipyards on Stedinger Deich.

Since the 19th century, the area of what is now the municipality of Lemwerder has been divided into the municipality of Altenesch , which belonged to the Oldenburg office of Delmenhorst and the municipality of Bardewisch, which belonged to the Oldenburg office of Elsfleth . In 1933 Altenesch and Bardewisch were merged with the communities of Berne , Neuenhuntorf and Warfleth to form the community of Stedingen in the Wesermarsch district.

Later the still important industrial companies settled there. The Weser aircraft works were built in 1936 . The development of airplanes and the flying in of all series machines made it necessary to build a suitable runway. The upward trend was interrupted by the Second World War. On March 18 and October 8, 1943, Lemwerder was hit by air raids that caused 52 deaths and extensive material damage (the Lemwerder-West district was almost completely destroyed).

On April 1, 1948, the municipality of Stedingen was dissolved again and divided into the municipalities of Altenesch and Berne. Bardewisch remained part of the Altenesch community. The settlement area of the municipality of Altenesch was expanded considerably in the period after the Second World War, initially due to the acceptance of expellees, later due to the influx of new residents, especially from neighboring Bremen.

The community name was changed from Altenesch to Lemwerder on November 15, 1972.

religion

53% of the population are Lutherans, 7% Catholics. The parishes of Altenesch / Lemwerder ( St. Gallus Church , Chapel on the Deich ) and Bardewisch ( Holy Cross Church ) belong to the Wesermarsch parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg . The Catholic Holy Spirit Church, built in the 1950s, belongs to the Delmenhorst Dean's Office in the Oldenburg official district of the Münster diocese . There is also a congregation of the New Apostolic Church in Northern Germany .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality is divided. In the upper white field a six-handle green steering wheel is shown as a symbol for the connection of the community with shipping, boat building and the river Weser. The lower green field shows a lively striding white horse as a symbol for the agriculture in the municipality of Lemwerder, which has always been important. The colors of the church are white and green.

The horse in the coat of arms stands for the favorite horse "crane" of Count Anton Günther von Oldenburg , who bred the horses around 1640 in the southern tip of the community, the former Vorwerk Weyhausen.
