Ludwig Münstermann
Ludwig Münstermann (* around 1560 or 1575; † around 1638/1639) was a sculptor and wood carver of Mannerism, probably from Bremen , who worked in Hamburg .
Life
Ludwig Münstermann is said to come from Bremen. Before 1599 he worked in the workshop of the Bremen sculptor Hans Winter (1565–1603). In addition, Tonnies and Heinrich Münstermann were carpenters in Bremen at the time. During this apprenticeship, he got to know the Mannerist style of decoration, which was taken over from Cornelis Floris and which was particularly widespread through engravings . In 1599 he became a master of the Hamburg turner's office as a not born in Hamburg. From 1607 to 1612 he worked at the Oldenburg Castle .
He designed many altars , pulpits and organ prospectuses in churches , especially in Oldenburg . The largest preserved altar is in the Varel Castle Church . In the St. Ansgariikirche in Bremen he worked on epitaphs (around 1590, in the winter workshop). The organ prospectus from the former castle chapel of Rotenburg / Wümme (1608) and a stone statue of Hercules are in the Focke Museum in Bremen.
In the churches of St. Matthäus in Stadland - Rodenkirchen (1629–31) and St. Secundus in Stadland- Schwei (1618–38) there are further altars, pulpits and baptismal font lids by Ludwig Münstermann, in Hohenkirchen the altar (1620) and pulpit (1628 ), in St. Hippolytus in Blexen altar figures and a pulpit (1638).
Münstermann is one of the most exposed representatives of mannerist sculpture in northern Germany. His style is characterized by peculiarly exaggerated figuration, moving to the point of grotesque, and dramatic expressiveness; the representations are framed by fragmented mannerist ornamentation and architectural elements. An essential part of his way of decoration are elaborate color versions in downright garish tones and luster , some of which were lost through incomprehensible "restorations". It is significant that Münstermann was only noticed by art history scholars in the era of Expressionism .
A street is named after him in the Hamburg district of Hamburg-Barmbek-Nord .
Markus Lüpertz is one of the contemporary artists who were inspired by Münstermann .
