The Delmenhorst – Lemwerder railway is a disused standard-gauge railway line owned by the city of Delmenhorst and the municipality of Lemwerder .

The line was still licensed for the Oldenburg State Railways and construction began in 1919, but on November 1, 1922, it was opened by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. It served the transport of agricultural goods and the connection of the shipyards and the aircraft factory ( Weser-Flugzeugbau ) in Lemwerder to the railway network as well as the transport of workers to the shipyards. In 1944, five pairs of passenger trains ran on weekdays. With the exception of the terminus in Lemwerder, all other stations were kept very simple and were operated by part-time workers. All stations had a loading platform connected to Delmenhorst as well as a goods shed. The Altenesch and Hasbergen stations also had cattle loading facilities, and the Deichhausen station had a bypass track connected on both sides for train crossings. Signal and barrier systems were only available in Lemwerder station.

Until May 27, 1962, the route was used by passenger trains. They left platform 1 at the old Delmenhorst train station. Most recently, however, all intermediate stops were canceled and there was only one morning train to Lemwerder on weekdays and back at the end of the shift. 1963 to 1966, the train transport was carried out by the Delmenhorst-Harpstedter Eisenbahn (DHE), then again by the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), which used the railway facilities of the former Lemwerder station to park freight cars.

In 1970 the railway facilities in Delmenhorst were redesigned, the line lost its introduction to the passenger station and, after having passed under the Bremen – Oldenburg line , ended on the DHE track to the freight station. This can only be reached via a saw run . The line running parallel to the current DHE track between the Delmenhorst passenger station and the crossing under the Bremen – Oldenburg line was decommissioned and dismantled as part of the renovation of the Delmenhorst station.

A few meters north of the junction from the Delmenhorst – Harpstedt railway line, the railway line crossed the siding to the former Delmenhorst wool combing at the same level. This right-angled intersection was dismantled after the United Worsted Spinning Mill was shut down in the mid-1980s.

In 1985, an industrial trunk line for the Nordica company was built in the southern section near Hasbergen by the city of Delmenhorst . This connection was used several times a day until the production site was relocated to Eastern Europe in the 1990s. As part of the construction work, a relocation option was created in the former Hasbergen station.

When the Deutsche Bundesbahn wanted to give up freight transport and initiated the closure procedure in 1993, the city of Delmenhorst and the municipality of Lemwerder acquired the infrastructure of the line in 1998. In 1995 a dam slide near Deichhausen resulted in the cessation of traffic north of Hasbergen.

Since 1997 the DHE has served the rest of the freight traffic in the Delmenhorst – Hasbergen section. After the route had been reconditioned, traffic was temporarily resumed on May 6, 2001. In addition to the occasional operation of goods traffic - the siding in Lemwerder had been given up after the cessation of operations in 1995 by the companies there and by the agricultural reference cooperatives in Altenesch and Hasbergen - there were also tourist steam train journeys by the Delmenhorst-Harpstedter Eisenbahnfreunde.

At the end of 2009, the section between Hasbergen and Lemwerder was closed due to faults in the superstructure; between September and October 2011, the tracks were dismantled on the section between the former Lemwerder station and around one kilometer north of the former Altenesch station. In mid-2013, the remainder of the line was closed to traffic due to the poor track condition and ailing bridge structures. In November 2014, the responsible committee of the city of Delmenhorst decided to give up the route on a legally permanent basis. The route was cleared in March 2018.

The Lemwerder and Hasbergen train stations were located in the outer dike area and were flooded during very high storm surges before the Ochtum barrage and the damage prevention measures in the foreland of Lemwerder, such as the February storm surge in 1962 , the January storm surge in 1976 and the storm surges of 1973 .
