Ochtum barrage

The Ochtum barrage near Lemwerder is located at the mouth of the Ochtum in the Weser . It serves the flood protection of the behind the barrage lying low country and in particular the protection of parts of Bremen , where it during the storm surge in February 1962 were the only fatalities Unterweser room, Delmenhorst and Stuhr . The barrage was built on the basis of a state treaty between the states of Lower Saxony and Bremen .

Together with the barrages on the Lesum and the Hunte , the Ochtum barrage is part of an overall concept for flood protection on the Unterweser, which went into operation on October 1, 1979 with the completion of the Huntes barrage . The Ochtum Barrage is operated by the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), Brake operating point .

The barrage was built in the 1970s. Construction work began in 1971/1972, and the barrage was operational in July 1976. For the choice of the location 300 meters above the mouth of the Ochtum, the approach path of an airfield and two gas pipes that cross the Weser were decisive. The construction was performed in a 1.5-kilometer-long average , of the riverbed moved the Ochtum and her mouth a little to the southeast. The barrage has two 10 meter wide openings that can be closed by lifting gates in the event of flooding. A lock 20 meters long and 8 meters wide was built for the heavy sport boat traffic on the Ochtum .

On average, the Ochtum Barrage is closed 82 times a year.
