The technical structure of the Lesum barrage on the Lesum serves as a flood protection and at the same time as a bridge connection between the northern Bremen districts of Grohn ( Bremen-Vegesack ) and Werderland (Lesumbrok) in Bremen-Burglesum . It was built from 1971 to 1974 about one kilometer above the confluence with the Weser . The barrage was operated by the Bremen Water Management Office until the 1990s and since then by the Bremischer Deichverband on the right bank of the Weser .

history

The construction of a barrage on the Lesum was already considered in 1617. At that time the plan failed because of the veto of Count Anton Günther from Oldenburg , who feared greater dangers for the Stedinger Land on the left side due to improved flood protection on the right side of the Weser . There were repeated further plans for such a project.

On September 18, 1968, the states of Lower Saxony and Bremen signed a state treaty to build three barriers. The Lesum barrage was to be built at the same time as the Ochtum barrage (near Lemwerder - Altenesch ) and the Huntes barrage (near Elsfleth ), as the construction of a single barrage could have had a negative impact on the water levels in the other waters. Construction work began in April 1971, the first lock gate hung in at the end of 1971, the first construction phase flooded at the end of 1972, the bridge structure completed in March and the structure completed by summer 1974.

During the high tide in January 1976, the completed barrage had to remain open because the other two barrages were not yet in operation and closing the Lesum barrage would have increased the risk of flooding in the other areas. It was not until October 18, 1979 that all three barrages were ready for use in the event of a flood. The inauguration took place on November 16, 1979.

The barrage is operated in such a way that the water level in the Lesum does not exceed a level of 2.70 meters upstream. The barrage has a lock for the passage of boats .
