About this picture

Elsfleth [ ɛlsˈfleːt ] is a town in the Wesermarsch district in the Oldenburger Land in Lower Saxony (Germany). After Nordenham and the district town of Brake, the city is the third largest municipality in the Wesermarsch and one of the oldest places on the Lower Weser. From 1814 to 1933 Elsfleth was the seat of the Elsfleth Office .

geography

location

Elsfleth is located on the Hunte , which comes from the Oldenburger Land, directly at its confluence with the Weser . The city of Oldenburg is located southwest of Elsfleth. Bremen lies in a southeastern direction .

Neighboring communities

In the north the city is bounded by the municipality of Ovelgönne and in the northeast by the district town of Brake . In the east, the Weser forms the border with the opposite municipality of Schwanewede in the Osterholz district . Elsfleth borders the municipality of Berne in the southeast and the municipality of Hude in the Oldenburg district in the south . In the southwest the city has a border with the city of Oldenburg and in the west it borders on the municipality of Rastede in the district of Ammerland .

Nature reserves

There are several nature reserves in the Elsflether urban area , for which the Wesermarsch district is the responsible lower nature conservation authority. They are all in the sparsely populated southwestern part of the city on the border with the city of Oldenburg.

The nature reserve Gellener Torfmöörte with Rockenmoor and Fuchsberg is 313 hectares. It consists of three sub-areas and was created in December 2018 by merging and expanding the previous nature reserves Gellener Torfmöörte and Rockenmoor / Fuchsberg . It secures a small section of the formerly extensive Ipweger Moor.

Before the merger, the Gellener Peat Moor , which was 120 hectares in size, consists of a raised bog and low bog complex with fallow bog grassland, ponds, silting and forest communities as well as peat cuttings and bog heaths. The 155 hectare high moor area Rockenmoor / Fuchsberg consists of two parts and is located between the cities of Oldenburg and Elsfleth on the edge of the Geest in the transition area to the Wesermarsch.

The 99 hectare nature reserve Moorhauser Polder is located in the west of the city of Elsfleth and is part of the EU bird sanctuary Hunteniederung . The Moorhauser Polder is a floodplain , the meadows of which are often flooded in autumn and winter and are therefore an important resting area for migratory birds. In the west, this area borders directly on the 350 hectare Bornhorster Huntewiesen nature reserve , which is mostly located in the Oldenburg area, only around 10 hectares of the area are in the Elsflether area. The wetland area is a bird resting place of international importance.

history

Not north-facing map with the Stedinger Land
Count Anton Günther

Elsfleth is one of the older places on the Lower Weser with its first documentary mention around 1220. However, parts of today's urban area were settled long before that. At Elsfleth-Hogenkamp, one of several Germanic settlement sites from the Roman Empire was found on the Lower Weser. The exact time when medieval Elsfleth was founded is unknown. Bishop Ansgar von Bremen is said to have founded the town's first church as early as 860 . In the 12th century and in the 13th century, at the time of the Stedinger , Elsfleth was the ecclesiastical center of Stedingen .

In the middle of the 14th century, Elsfleth came under the rule of the Counts of Oldenburg . The St. Nicolai Church was built in 1504 and rebuilt to its present form in 1690. With the establishment of the Elsflether Weserzoll by Count Anton Günther , Elsfleth experienced a significant boom from 1624. The Weser tariff was levied until 1820. Elsfleth received town charter on May 1, 1856.

Elsfleth's favorable location at the confluence of the Weser and Hunte rivers, as well as the nearby North Sea, resulted in Elsfleth's ties to seafaring and shipbuilding. They were also decisive factors for the further economic development of Elsfleth. In the middle of the 19th century, Elsfleth developed into the most important port in the state of Oldenburg .

Between 1817 and 1833 Elsfleth was the port of call for the first steamship Die Weser built by a German shipbuilder and operated by a German shipowner . The paddle steamer was put into operation on May 6, 1817 and ran in regular service on the route between Bremen and Brake . From 1827 the ship operated via Brake to Geestemünde .

In 1875 Elsfleth was one of the largest shipping companies in Germany . 22  shipping companies were based in Elsfleth and around 100 ships were based in Elsfleth. Several shipyards built sailing ships in Elsfleth . At the same time, the image of the port was also shaped by the sailing school ships of the German School Ship Association. In 1832 the navigation school was founded, from which the present-day nautical school emerged.

Elsfleth experienced its economic decline with the advent of steam ships . The settled shipyards could not switch from building wooden ships to building iron ships quickly enough, which brought shipbuilding to a standstill.

Today Elsfleth is shaped by numerous companies, including a shipbuilding company, a packaging plant and some shipping companies .

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974, the formerly independent municipality of Moorriem , consisting of Neuenbrok , Bardenfleth and Altenhuntorf , was incorporated. It was built around 1050 as a moorland settlement. Elsfleth belonged to the administrative district Weser-Ems until December 31, 2004 , which was dissolved as a result of an administrative reform at the end of this date.

Outsourcing

On March 1, 1974, the areas to the right of the Weser were ceded to the community of Schwanewede ( Osterholz district ).

Place name

Old names of the place are 1220 Elsflete , 1285 Elsvlete and 1383 Elsfleth . The place name and its tradition since 1220 is a combination of else , i.e. alder and vlêt for water.

coat of arms

coat of arms

The city's coat of arms shows elements from the Oldenburg coat of arms in the upper half . In the lower half, a ship's cutter is shown on the left, symbolizing the importance of fishing and fish processing for the city. The star above the ship's cutter stands for navigation and is derived from the navigation school founded in 1832, later the Elsfleth seafaring school. The lower right area shows a horseshoe and spur symbolizing traditional horse breeding in the region. The coat of arms was last changed in 1974. The previously valid coat of arms from 1911 was awarded by the Grand Duke of Oldenburg and showed a fish in the lower part instead of today's symbols.

Town twinning

From March 13, 1999 to the end of 2014, there was a twinning between the city of Elsfleth and the city of Marstal on the Danish island of Ærø . In 2006 the island's independent municipalities were merged into a single administrative unit, the municipality of Ærø . The town twinning was therefore converted into a town twinning with the new municipality of Ærø on May 11, 2007 with retroactive effect from January 1, 2006. At the end of 2014 this twinning was canceled by the Danish side.
