Hinrich Wilhelm Schröder (born December 13, 1853 in Nordermoor in the Wesermarsch ; † June 9, 1939 there ) was a German politician and from 1905 to 1928 long-time President of the Oldenburg State Parliament .

Life

Professional career

Wilhelm Schröder came from an old farming family of the Wesermarsch, which has been traceable there for over 400 years. His parents were home Heinrich Schroeder and his wife born Hinrike Cordes. Both died of typhus when Schröder was four years old, so that as an orphan he grew up mostly with strangers. He attended elementary school in Elsfleth and from 1869 received private tuition in Oldenburg for some time . He then completed an apprenticeship in agriculture in Dalsper and attended the agricultural college in Neuchâtel from 1871 to 1873 . He did his military service as a one-year volunteer and spent a few months in France as part of the Prussian occupation army . After an agricultural internship, Schröder was finally able to take over his parents' farm, which had previously been leased, on May 1, 1875 and expand it considerably.

In addition to his professional career, Schröder also took on a variety of voluntary activities, such as that of the district chairman of his home municipality. After the early death of his wife, he went to Göttingen University as a guest student in 1886/87 and took two semesters of economics . During this time he was appointed to the board of directors of the Oldenburg Farmers' Liability Insurance Association, which he took over as chairman shortly afterwards and held it until he was 80 years old. In addition, he was also active in other agricultural organizations and made special contributions to horse breeding in Oldenburg. In 1903 he was awarded the title of Economics Council .

Schröder was also politically active, initially joining the National Liberal Party and, from 1919, the German People's Party . From 1887 to 1931 he was a member of the Oldenburg state parliament, in which he quickly made a name for himself with questions relating to agriculture, rural and agricultural schools and the settlement system. Despite his rather conservative and national attitude, he was definitely in favor of extending the rights of parliament. In 1894 he applied for a one-year financial period, which was accepted in 1900. In 1902 Schröder became chairman of the important finance committee, a position he held until 1918. At the same time he became vice president of the state parliament. On November 7, 1905, he was elected President of the Landtag and held this office with brief interruptions in 1919/20 and from 1925 to 1928. After that, he served until 1931 again as Vice-President of the Landtag.
