Life

Ahlhorn was the son of Johann Friedrich Ahlhorn, who owned five farms and two mills in Jade and Schweiburg . He attended elementary school and completed an agricultural education. He then traveled extensively through Russia, England, France and even North Africa. In 1842 he married Anna Margarethe Öltjen (1821–1876), the marriage remained childless. His economic independence enabled Ahlhorn to pursue intensive political activities since the 1850s, during which he became one of the leading men of the Oldenburg left-wing liberals and the leadership of the Oldenburg Progress Party . From 1856 to 1893 he was a member of the Oldenburg State Parliament, in which he distinguished himself as a member and later also chairman of the finance committee. He was also from 1872 to 1876 and from 1878 to 1893 Vice-President and from 1876 to 1878 President of this Parliament.

After an unsuccessful attempt in 1877, he won a seat in the Reichstag for the German Progressive Party in the constituency of the Province of Hanover 2 Aurich , Wittmund , Leer . In the elections of 1884, however, he was unable to maintain his mandate.
