biography

Groß was the son of the Braker merchant and innkeeper Gerhard Groß (1789–1881) and his wife Lucia Cornelie Christine nee. Torture (1793-1859). He was first educated by private tutors and then attended grammar school and the upper class of the higher middle school in Oldenburg . In 1849 he became a seaman in the German imperial fleet, which was under the command of his later brother-in-law Karl Rudolf Brommy . After its dissolution, he switched to the merchant navy in 1852 and drove as a seaman and finally as chief helmsman, mainly on the America and Australia routes . In 1857 he returned to Brake and joined the administration of the shipyard founded by his father in Hammelwarden near Brake. In 1865 he took over the business, but gave it up again in 1871, as the conversion to iron shipbuilding destroyed the wooden shipyards on the Weser . After a transitional period as a partner in a Braker forwarding company , he founded his own forwarding company and shipping company in 1876 , which grew rapidly and, together with the Johannes Müller company, achieved a monopoly position in the port of Brake.

Groß was also involved in economic self-government organizations as well as in local and state politics. From 1873 until his death he was 1st chairman of the Braker Handelsverein and 2nd chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in Oldenburg, which was founded in 1900 . He was a long-time member and temporarily chairman of the city council of Brake and also a member of the local council. From 1881 to 1883 and from 1887 to 1905 he was a member of the Oldenburg State Parliament, and since 1896 its president.

Groß also served as the Belgian consul and the British vice-consul.
