history

Christmas market at Neuchâtel Castle

In 1462 that rose Oldenburg Graf Gerd the brave right to the Frisian Wehde and built it on the dividing line to East Friesland the castle Neuenburg ( Nige Borg ). Towards the end of the 16th century, the fortress was converted into a representative residential palace. Today the castle houses an ornithological museum, the castle chapel of the Evangelical - Lutheran congregation and the wedding hall, which also serves as the meeting room of the Zetel parish council.

On July 1, 1972, Neuchâtel was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Zetel.

nature

The Neuchâtel jungle is the centerpiece of the 640 hectare Neuchâtel wood and used to be a pasture for horses, cattle, pigs and geese. Grazing has been prohibited since 1917 and the forest became a nature reserve in 1938 . In 2019 the nature reserve became part of the newly designated nature reserve "Neuenburger Holz", which includes almost the entire forest area.

In the post-war period, around half of the jungle was destroyed as firewood by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages. In the remainder, mighty oaks and beeches grow without human intervention and it can be observed that the oak-beech population is changing in favor of the latter. The beeches leaf out earlier than the oaks, take away the light and suffocate them over time. Today the 800-year-old oak trees have largely become ruins. Nevertheless, the jungle has remained a popular excursion destination, as there are still plants and animals to be seen here that have become rare elsewhere. The 400-year-old Rauchkate , which used to stand on the edge of the jungle, was moved near the castle in 1964 and set up as a museum.

Neuchâtel is the seat of a state forest office from which state forests in East Friesland , in Ammerland and in the districts of Friesland and Wesermarsch are administered.
