The forests generally have structure-rich inner and outer forest edges as well as a high proportion of old and dead wood . In places, clearings and larger, predominantly moist grassland areas as well as small bodies of water and forest ponds are embedded in the forests. These are partly the result of recultivation measures in former clay mining areas . Tall herbaceous meadows sometimes settle in clear areas . The edges of the forest are in places pronounced as wall hedges .
