The Stapeler Moor and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony communities of Uplengen in the district of Leer , Zetel in the district of Friesland , Friedeburg in the district of Wittmund and the city of Westerstede in the district of Ammerland .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 143 is around 1,155 hectares in size. It is part of the FFH area "Lengener Meer, Stapeler Moor, Baasenmeers-Moor". In the north it borders in places on the 3.5 and 4 hectare protected landscape areas "Am Zollweg" and "Ruttelerfeld". The area has been under protection since September 1, 2016. The previous, connected nature reserves “ Lengener Meer ”, “ Spolsener Moor ”, “ Stapeler Moor ” and the “ Herrenmoor ” to the south-east of it have been completely absorbed. In addition, an approximately 8 hectare piece of land south of the nature reserve “ Stapeler Moor Süd and Kleines Bullenmeer ”, which was previously part of the FFH area but was not yet under nature protection, has been included in the scope of the nature conservation ordinance. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Ammerland, Friesland, Leer and Wittmund.

The nature reserve puts remains in the south of the formerly extensive East Frisian central moors under protection. It consists of three sub-areas: the sub-area "Lengener Meer / Stapeler Moor", which also includes the parcel adjoining the nature reserve "Stapeler Moor Süd and Kleines Bullenmeer" in the south, the sub-area "Spolsener Moor" directly to the east and the to the southeast of this lying sub-area "Herrenmoor". The redesignation of the nature reserve was necessary because the previous nature conservation ordinances - unlike the ordinance of the nature reserve “Stapeler Moor Süd and Kleines Bullenmeer” - did not take into account the requirements of the Habitats Directive.

The reserve serves mainly to preserve and promote the priority partly habitat types bog woodland , living high moors , dystrophic pond, capable of natural regeneration of degraded raised bogs, transition and quaking moore and peat moss Schlenken with its characteristic flora and fauna.
