The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 209 is 340  hectares in size. Of this, 338 hectares are in the Leer district and 2 hectares in the Aurich district. The nature reserve is completely part of the FFH area "Fehntjer Tief und Umgebung" and the EU bird sanctuary "Fehntjer Tief". In the north, the nature reserve, which lies completely south of the Fehntjer Tief , borders on the nature reserve " Fehntjer Tief-Nord ". The area has been a nature reserve since February 9, 1979. Responsible among nature conservation authorities are the districts of Leer and Aurich.

The area consists of three parts that are not directly connected to each other, two of which border on the Fehntjer Tief and directly on the nature reserve "Fehntjer Tief-Nord". The third and smallest sub-area is located a little south of the Fehntjer low and east of the A 31 . The entire nature reserve is characterized by grassland and wet meadows and is mainly used extensively for agriculture, to a small extent in the eastern area also for arable farming.
