The Unterems is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city ​​of Emden as well as the cities of Leer and Weener and the communities of Jemgum , Moormerland and Westoverledingen in the district of Leer .

The nature reserve with the registration NSG WE 292 is around 2,040  hectares in size. Almost all of it is also designated as the FFH area “Unterems and Außenems”, which extends over 7,376.81 hectares. Partial areas are also designated as an EU bird sanctuary "Emsmarsch from Leer to Emden", which extends over 4,019 hectares. In Hatzum the nature reserve bordering on a short piece of the landscape conservation area "Rheiderland" and in Pogum to the nature reserve " Outer Ems " and to the National Park Wadden Sea . The nature reserves " Emsauen between the mouth of the Ledam and Oldersum ", " Nendorper Deichvorland " and " Petkumer Deichvorland " have merged into the nature reserve. The area has been under nature protection since June 15, 2017.

The nature reserve stretches along the Ems just above the mouth of the Leda in the Ems near Leer to the mouth of the Ems in the Dollart, southeast of Emden. It includes the course of the river Ems with its mudflats and the adjacent floodplain areas between the dykes on the left and right of the Ems with brackish water-influenced banks. Vordeichsgelände at Bingum , Jemgum, Nüttermoor and Midlum are excluded from the scope of the Nature Conservation Ordinance. These areas are used by port facilities, businesses or a campsite. Also excluded from the scope of the Nature Conservation Ordinance are the confluence of the Sauteler Canal and the Ems Lateral Canal into the Ems as well as the docks of the Ditzum – Petkum ferry and its access roads.

The nature reserve is crossed by the Jann-Berghaus-Brücke near Leer . Furthermore, the Ems barrage is located slightly above the confluence of the Ems in the Dollart , which as a structure is excluded from the scope of the nature conservation ordinance.

Flora and fauna

The tidal flats and shallow water zones are of great importance for fish and species of macrozoobenthos . The dike foothills are flooded when the water levels are high. Unused areas are occupied by reed beds, brackish and salt marshes with salt marshes and moist tall herbaceous meadows . In places, alluvial forest remains have been preserved. Large areas are used extensively as grassland . The nature reserve is an important feeding, breeding and resting area for numerous coastal birds , waders and ducks . So here are avocet , lapwing , redshank , black-tailed godwit , snipe , curlew , oystercatcher and sand and Kentish home. Also shelduck , spoon , Krick- and Gadwall and Coot and Spotted Crake occur here, as well as herring and Gull . Other species of birds in the nature reserve are pipe , hen harrier and short-eared owl , bittern , corncrake and bluethroat , bearded tit and Sedge Warbler .

Together with the Rheiderland , the Dollart and the marshes to the right of the Ems, the area is an outstanding wintering area for Nordic geese. As such, it has international significance. During the bird migration and the winter months are gray , barnacle , Bläss- , Canadian , footed , ringed , seeds and Zwerggans found. Further guest birds are singing and Tundra Swan , Knäk- , haddock , spit , whistling and Pochard , goose and Smew , shell , silver and common gull , also Whimbrel , Greenshank , Redshank , Green Sandpiper , Sandpiper , Ruff and golden plover .

The Ems is the habitat of feint , river and sea lamprey , among others . The pond bat is also native to the nature reserve.
