Vellage is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Weener in the district of Leer .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 302 is approximately 8.4  hectares . It is part of the FFH area "Ems". The nature reserve borders in the south on the nature reserve “ Emsauen between Herbrum and Vellage ”, from which it is separated by the Emsdeich. The area has been under nature protection since June 16, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Leer.

The nature reserve, which consists of two parts, is located northwest of Papenburg . It places three inland dykes and the surrounding areas under protection. The waters are surrounded by woods, which are mainly made up of black alder and willow . In the western part of the area there is a partly swampy forest with black alder, ash and various willows bordering the Vellager Kolk . The trees have a high proportion of old and dead wood . In the western of the two sub-areas between the Vellager and the Salzinger Kolk and on the Emsdeich there is extensively used grassland .

Spawning herbs and frog bites settle in the two older ponds, which were probably created by soil degradation, the Vellager Kolk in the western part and the small water body in the eastern part . Shore and silting areas are u. a. of sweet flag , swan flower , marsh marigold , marsh iris and marsh Calla taken. The Salzinger Kolk was created in the 1970s through soil degradation. It has steep embankments.

The waters are the habitat of crucian carp , rudd and mud whip . There are also great pond clams and various dragonflies , including the shiny emerald dragonfly . The waters are also the habitat of whistling and tufted duck and Kingfisher . The trees in the nature reserve offer z. B. Great sparrow and green woodpecker , house sparrow , starling , cuckoo and buzzard provide a suitable habitat.
