Waste wood (forestry)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In forestry, old wood is used to describe a stand that has reached its maturity . These stocks are felled in a commercial enterprise and the areas freed up are used for regeneration .

Due to the high proportion of dead wood , old wood is also the habitat of numerous endangered species , which is why their protection is often required. Various forest administrations are trying to satisfy this desire by preserving old wood islands . For this purpose, parts of the stock are specifically removed from management and left to their own devices. The trees become overaged , and this creates a high proportion of dead wood, which provides nesting sites for cave breeders and a habitat for dead wood-dwelling insects , fungi or lichens .
