Hendley S. Bennett

Hendley Stone Bennett (born April 7, 1807 in Franklin , Tennessee , † December 15, 1891 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1857 he represented the second constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hendley Bennett was born in Tennessee, but came early to West Point , Mississippi, where he attended public schools. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1830, he began to work in his new profession in Columbus . Between 1846 and 1854 he worked as a judge.

Bennett became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1854 he was elected as their candidate for the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced William Taylor Sullivan Barry on March 4, 1855 . Since he was not nominated for re-election by his party in the next election, Bennett could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1857 .

After his tenure in Congress was over, Bennett returned to working as a Columbus attorney. In 1859 he moved to Paris , Texas , where he also practiced as a lawyer. Between August 5, 1861, and the August 31, 1862 Bennett soldier was in the army of the States Confederate and took as such in the rank of Captain in the Civil War part. Then he worked again as a lawyer. In 1886, Hendley Bennett returned to his native Franklin. There he also practiced as a lawyer. He died in 1891 and was buried in Franklin.
