Patrick W. Tompkins

Patrick Watson Tompkins (* 1804 in Kentucky , † May 8, 1853 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the third constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The exact date and place of birth of Patrick Tompkins are not known. After a rather poor school education, he studied law. Following his admission to the bar, he began to work in his new profession in Vicksburg . There he was also a district judge.

Politically, Tompkins became a member of the Whig Party . In the 1846 congressional elections, he was elected as their candidate for the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took over from Democrat Robert W. Roberts on March 4, 1847 . Tompkins only served one term in Congress until March 3, 1849 . During this time he was chairman of the Department of Navy's Expenditure Control Committee.

In 1849, after serving in Congress, Tompkins joined the many emigrants to California who hoped to get rich from gold discoveries there. Patrick Tompkins died in May 1853 in San Francisco and was buried there.
