William Webster "Webb" Franklin (born December 13, 1941 in Greenwood , Mississippi ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1987 he represented the second constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Webb Franklin attended Greenwood High School and then until 1963 Mississippi State University in Starkville . Finally, he studied law at the University of Mississippi at Oxford . In 1966 he was admitted to the bar by the Bar. Until 1970 he was a military lawyer in the US Army . After retiring from the military, Franklin practiced as a private attorney from 1970 to 1972 before becoming a district attorney in Mississippi's fourth judicial district. He held this office from 1972 to 1978. From 1978 to 1982 he was a judge in the same district.

Politically, Franklin became a member of the Republican Party . In the 1982 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat David R. Bowen on January 3, 1983 . This made him the first Republican elected in this district since Elza Jeffords left Congress in 1885 . After a re-election in 1984, Franklin was able to exercise his mandate until January 3, 1987. In the 1986 elections he was defeated by Mike Espy . Franklin has returned to practice as a lawyer since his tenure in Congress ended. Today he lives again in his native Greenwood.
