Christopher Rankin
Christopher Rankin (born 1788 in Washington County , Pennsylvania , † March 14, 1826 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1826 he represented the first constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .
Career
The exact date of birth of Christopher Rankin is unknown. However, the sources assume 1788 as the year of his birth. He attended school in Canonsburg , Pennsylvania. After that, he moved to Georgia , where he worked as a teacher and studied law at the same time. After his admission to the bar in 1809, he began working in his new profession in Liberty , Amite County, Mississippi.
Rankin joined the Democratic Republican Party . In 1813 he was a member of the Mississippi Territory House of Representatives . In 1816 he moved to Natchez , where he also worked as a lawyer. In 1817 Rankin was a member of the Mississippi Constituent Assembly. At that time, he also unsuccessfully applied for a seat in the US Senate . In the following years he held various local offices.
In the congressional election of 1818 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington. There he replaced George Poindexter on March 4, 1819 . After he was re-elected in 1820, 1822 and 1824, he could remain in Congress until his death on March 14, 1826 . There he was temporarily chairman of the committee that dealt with the administration of state properties. Christopher Rankin was buried in the Washington Convention Cemetery.
