Ujian

Ujian (born June 1994 in Zurich ) is a male orangutan who taught himself to whistle .

Ujian was born in the Zurich Zoo . Since his mother did not accept him, he was initially housed in the ape breeding station in the Wilhelma in Stuttgart . At the age of four he moved to the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg , and in 2005 he came to the Heidelberg Zoo . Here he learned to whistle in the summer of 2008. Allegedly, the monkey was trying to attract the attention of the vegetable supplier, who did not immediately bring the food to the cage. After he had had the desired success with initially single whistles, Ujian continued to develop his art. Meanwhile, a CD featuring Ujian has been recorded. The tone sequence of the melody to which Tobias Kämmerer sings was given by Ujian.

Recordings of Ujian's whistles were also sent to the Great Ape Center in Iowa for analysis .

While Ujian developed his whistling technique without a role model or instruction, he has since found an imitator in his cage mate Puan. However, the fact that orangutans whistle is a rare phenomenon overall. Besides Ujian and Puan, only two other whistling conspecifics are known, the female "Bonnie" and her daughter "Indah" in the Washington Zoo .

Since Ujian is not only interested in whistling but also in dealing with paper and paint, he and his fellow species regularly get painting utensils in their cages in the Heidelberg zoo. The zoo tries to finance improvements to the animal shelters by selling the products.
